Food Allergy

Milk allergy mom's a ?

Ok so after posting on here and doing a little research I decided on a complete dairy elimination from my diet.  I started on Saturday night.  No milk, whey, caessin, etc.

Here is my question.  My DS was having a BM at every feeding.  For the last 24 hours he  has only had one BM.  He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable.  He had some bad gas last night but passed it with very little problem.  Should I be concerned?  Is it a good sign? Would I even see results this fast?  I was under the impression it would take weeks to see a difference.

  • DS has a dairy sensitivity.  When I eliminated dairy, he went from pooping multiple times a day to every other day on average.  When I slip up, he goes back to pooping more often and (TMI) the consistency changes to become more mucus-y.  I think when his gut is irritated the mucus it produces makes him go more often.  It'll take a couple of weeks for the proteins to completely clear his system, but I wouldn't be surprised at seeing results sooner than that if you're no longer exposing his gut to them.

  • I think it's a good sign.  My daughter pooped 8-10 times a day before I removed dairy and then it changed to 1-3 times when I was dairy-free.  He may actually be able to absorb the nutrients better from the foods you eat and gain some more weight.  It was amazing the amount of weight my daughter gained once I cut dairy from my diet.

This exactly.  I thought it was normal for a baby to poop 10 times a day.  Once dairy and soy were out, his pooping dropped to once or twice a day.  The consistency was drastically improved as well.  No more watery, mucus-y stools.

  • I hope it's a good thing, but I've actually been somewhat concerned too. My DD went to pooping only every 3-6 days. The doc says it's fine, "normal", as long as it's not hard.

Sorry to laugh, but this made me LOL.  I remember telling people, "She is SO healthy! She poops all of the time."  Man, was I an idiot!

  • I think it's probably a good sign?  Have you asked your doctor?  My LO was pooping all the time as well, and for the most part he still has 1-3 a day.  But the main thing is when I cut out dairy/soy (egg/tomatoes too!) his stools went from green, mucuosy, bloody, to yellow and mucuos/blood free.  They were always pretty runny though until we started solids.

Anyway, my point is, I think I read somewhere that BFing babies can sometimes not have any bowel movements for days and not be constipated.  It's really rare for BFing babies to get constipated.  I would say if your LO is not strainging, crying, in pain, etc, then I don't think you need to worry.

    You're doing a great job!
