Hives and Benadryl

So, my LO broke out in hives today and pedi said to give her some benadryl. Well, I did and a minute later she vomited everywhere.

Do I try to give it to her again in the morning if the hives are still there, or do I call pedi and ask for an alternative?  Just not sure why she threw up, was it the medicine? The flavor (bubble gum yuck!)?

  • As far as I know there is no alternative. Give it nice and slow. DD doesnt like it but when she breaks out we have no choice. I tasted it and didnt think it was that bad in taste

  • You could try Zyrtec or another antihistamine. Just call the pedi in the morning and ask. It might be the flavor. That sounds super gross. I threw up many a time as a little kid after taking Tylenol. My parents eventually figured out it was the flavor. Once they switched it up I was fine. It might be the same way for your LO.
  • Were you giving her Benadryl because of a food allergy?  Maybe she threw up because of the food, not the medicine.

The hives started during the day while I was at work. It wasn't until much later that the benadryl was given so I do not think the vomiting was due to the food allergy...but good thought!!! Thank you!

  • see if you can get the dye free stuff.  Sometimes kids are alergic to the dye.
