Any experiences with a fever lasting more than 4 days?

Just curious at what point I need to worry.  I think we'll call the doc tomorrow but DS2 really has no other symptoms aside from being incredibly crabby on and off.  The highest it's gotten was 101 point something.  Motrin is helping take it down.

I hate all illnesses.  Period.

Re: Any experiences with a fever lasting more than 4 days?

  • There was a virus going around our daycare that caused fever - just fever.  C had one for 5 days.  I called the pedi on the third or fourth day and talked to a nurse, told me what to look out for, etc.  I would call in the am just to be sure, but wouldn't worry.  I was told that as long as the Motrin was working, he wasn't lathargic and seemed to be acting normal (although a bit crabby from feeling yucky) that it wasn't anything to be concerned about.

  • So glad you posted this.  We are on day 2 of a totally random fever.  She was at my mom's yesterday so I don't know how high it was, but in feeling her overnight it was def. over 100.  This morning, nothing- happy, etc.  Then the low grade comes back later- it's been around 99.1-99.6.  I don't medicate for fevers unless they are higher and/or they are lethargic, so we're just seeing where it goes.  So weird.  My kids have hardly ever had fevers, so they freak me out a bit...

I would just call to see what your pedi says. I don't think they start to worry until the temp is over 102 for 4 days. The "just fever" viruses I've seen usually last 5 days and then the fever is gone like it was never here.
  • Last summer DS had a low grade fever for a week.. I finally took him in mostly because of guilt (he had no other symptoms), his pedi just said "just chock it up to a week off." I think hand foot mouth disease is going around, that can be just a fever for a long time. Very frustrating. DS was basically just a big crankster for a week and I had to use a week of PTO.
  • Ok so I thought I'd update anyone interested.  Took him to the pedi today, and they swabbed for strep saying his throat looked really raw.  The rapid test was negative, but I've heard that song and dance before so we'll wait for the longer version.

Fun thing then happened on the way back to work - daycare called, #1 spiked a fever today of 102 and needed to be picked up.  Yippeeeee two sick kids!
