first time waxing (NBR)

So DH and I leave for Jamaica on Friday (we're overnighting in Toronto on the way, so we don't actually get there until Saturday). I am so sick of the itchiness and red bumps so soon after shaving my bikini line, so I've decided to try waxing - eep!! Kinda scared but I think I can do it. My question for those who have done it before, is how fast does it grow back? I know it's supposed to last longer than shaving, but not sure how much. I'm debating whether to do it Friday before we leave or take it with me and do it in the hotel room when we get there, Saturday afternoon.

Thanks!!

Re: first time waxing (NBR)

  • I would do it Friday before you go.  Take some Ibuprofen awhile before to help with some of the pain, or something stronger, lol!  It's not that bad, but I've never done it by myself (always at a salon).  Make sure that you have about 1/4 inch or so of hair or it will be hard to do.  Would DH help you?  It's kinda nice to have someone hold the skin while the other pulls.  I think doing it before will allow time for the tenderness/redness to subside.  I can't remember how long before it grows back the first time.  You should be fine throughout your trip.  As long as you keep doing it, it will take longer to return.  Have fun in Jamaica!!!

  • I waxed for 3 years before becoming pregnant with LO... I have also tried to do it myself, but I can honestly say its so worth the $45-$60 to get it professionally done. I guess it also depends if you are going completely bare of just a bikini wax? Spend the money and get it done- best advice I do have though. I tried to have a bf do it with me one time and that was awful!
  • I agree with the PP, pay to have it done. It is more painful when you don't know what your doing! If you are just doing a bikini and not a brazillian it only costs about $15 (at least around here) and a box of wax us practically that. It is cleaner, easier and less painful to outsource that job- and I know from experience! Have fun jamaica!

  • If this is your first time waxing, then you should do it at home on Friday. It is very frustrating and I lose my patience often because it is surprisingly painful if you don't do it right. Besides, it is going to take a little time to start getting it right. I have never had it professionally done, but my suggestion is to give over the money. It will be nice to have it taken care of.

  • Definitely do it before you go. Your skin will be too irritated with the salt water, trust me. Then it will look (and feel) even worse than if you shaved.

Pregnant women should not take ibuprofen (or anything "stronger").

OP, if you've never waxed yourself before, I'd recommend going to a salon rather than trying to do it yourself. Some of those home-waxing kits do not work nearly as well as they pretend to. It will be more expensive if you do it at a salon, but they'll do a much better job. I got a bikini wax at a salon 2 days before my wedding, and it lasted well past our week-long honeymoon.

  • I LOVE getting waxed (the after-result of course!) - I feel sooo good afterwards. I suggest getting it done professionally - for me I HATE going, but the pain is so worth it! You'll love the result! I'd go a couple of days before you leave - it won't grow back for a few weeks usually. (though I hear pregnant woman's hair grows faster so I don't know for sure.) I've not been waxed while pregnant, but I heard it hurts more for some reason - not trying to scare you, just prepare you. At first I was more worried about being naked in front of a stranger, that was gone the minute I got the first rip! Haha. GL!

  • Thanks everyone! I already bought the kit and money is a bit tight right now (my job is commission based and summer is low season), so I'll definitely be doing it at home, but I might try it professionally next time I need it done (I only bother with my bikini line when I'm going to be in a swimsuit without shorts). I'm just doing the bikini line - I have zero interest in Brazilian!! I doubt it is only $15 to do it professionally in these parts though - Calgary is expensive :(

  • I'm an epilator-lover now, but I used to wax. Like others, I suggest outsourcing it, but if you're commited to doing it yourself let me give you the most important piece of advice I can give.

    Powder yourself first.

    Seriously. Do it.

Because if the wax grabs onto both your skin *and* hair? Well, aside from scabs being the exact opposite of sexy, you will want to do nothing but cram ice packs down your pants for the next week. Probably not something you can feasibly do on your vacation. Wink

  • I am wishing you all the luck in the world!  I tried it ONE time and didn't even make it through because it was so painful (I'm sure I screwed it up).  I typically use Nair now..

  • Pull the skin tight, be sure there's enough of the strip that you can hold a firm grasp throughout your pull.  If you have to pull the same strip twice, the pain quadruples.

Afterward, though, it feels soooo good. Smile
