William never really got a nursery -- his room came together in fits and starts because we were changing it over from DH's office to a nursery, so it's sort of a hotchpotch of stuff right now. We're planning to get him new furniture for Christmas and I'd like to do what we did with Elizabeth and get some nice pieces that will last him into high school if we change out the linens.
But I have NO clue how to decorate a little boy's room. Dark wood? Painted? What will be okay for him now and still be okay when he's 15 or 16? The one thing we do have in his room that will probably stay is a vintage WWII Army Air Corps poster from his great-grandfather, so I'm toying with the idea of vintage airplanes and/or trains.
Re: Decorating a "big boy" room
I tend to agree. Gavin's nursery was a nautical theme. Lots of blues. The boats/ships wheels and all were accessories and easily changed out. His big boy room is Star Wars (from Pottery Barn). The blue walls are the same, I just switched out the bedding and accessories. Personally, I like dark wood furniture. Gavin's bed is actually blue metal. The other pieces (bookshelves) are espresso. So I'm not big on matchy matchy. He has my brothers old dresser in the closet. It's white w/ yellow and blue trim. But it is in rough shape so that's why I hid it :-) Anyway, if you don't go overboard with a theme, it's easy to change it as time goes on. Also remember that wall decals are your friend! They make a big impact, don't cost much, and are easy to remove. I really like the vintage airplane idea: Have you seen this bedding from Restoration Hardware? Check out their website for lots of ideas and then look for knock offs. That's how I did Sophie's room.
I would just pull some colors from the poster and go from there. I put a very colorful plaid quilt in Ethan's room, and it could last him forever. The curtain panels, lamp shade, picture frames, etc are just all colors pulled from his quilt, and then I can easily change out the transportation decor if he wants to.
As far as the vintage airplane stuff goes, they have good ones at Hobby Lobby....wait till "metal decor" goes on sale for 50% off (I think it's about once a month) and then stock up. You could put them on a shelf or dresser, or we hung ours from the ceiling with fishing line.
