Breastfeeding

Those of you w/ 8 / 9 month olds in daycare

If your 8-9m old spends a full day at dc, how much breast milk are you providing? How much solid food is baby taking there as well? I was bringing 16oz for the longest time + 1 solid serving. In the past week, I increased it to two solids (1/2 jar each time.) Staff are telling me she needs more milk. I'm only pumping about 12oz a day and dipping into weekend pumping and frozen supply to make it through the week. Just trying to get an idea of what you all do.

Ever since AF reappeared, and my bad stomach flu a few weeks ago, my supply has gone down. I'm taking Mother's love supplements and not seeing any radical change. I eat lots of oatmeal/drink lots of water. Should I supplement (which I really don't want to do) or should I increase solid amount and send yogurt to dc as well. I am planning to introduce yogurt this weekend.

 Thanks!!

  • Are you sure that she needs more milk? Some dcp get confused with bf babies. Bf babies need to eat slowly to realize that they are full. They also don't need more and more milk as they get older. The amount of bm needed is constant between 1-6 months, and doesn't go up much after that. I would ask about how they are feeding your DD. I would want them to hold the bottle horizontally and spread out the feeding so that it lasts as long as your nursing sessions do. I send DD's bm for each session in two bottles (Medela vials). So, they have to stop and switch bottles (just like I stop, burp, and switch boobs). DCP look at formula charts and may think that bf babies need that amount. But bf babies need less than formula babies, because there's less waste. A good starting point is one ounce for every hour you are apart.

We took solids slowly, but at 8/9 months I was sending 2 ounces, twice a day. A lot of babies eat more solids than that though.

  • Ah,I feel your pain with the illness and AF. Both LO and I had the stomach flu, he had a double ear infection and I got AF all in a three week span. It was brutal on my supply, but it rebounded. I did take Fenugreek for a week or so, but honestly didn't notice a huge difference from taking it.

My LO is in daycare PT so I'm not on the exact same schedule, but on the days I work a full 8 hours, I nurse LO at drop off (about 7:45am), he gets a 5 oz bottle around 10:30, a 4 oz bottle around 1:30pm and a 4 oz bottle around 4-4:30.

So, he's getting about 13 oz of milk and one feeding of solids in the AM, usually about 1/2 a jar. We do another solid feeding at home in the evenings.

I would see if you can't hold off DC with increasing the milk for a week or so and see how things shake out. I would think the addition of the second solid would help, it may just take time.
