I'm so overwhelmed. 4 out of the 5 people in our house have allergies / sensitivities to food. My oldest is 14 and has had zero food allergy issues. He doesn't have gluten, dairy, soy, etc bc the rest of us don't eat it but it's not a big deal if he's exposed at a friends house or anything. This morning he had his very first allergic reaction to something in his life. In less than one minute he went from being fine to his face, ears, neck, mouth, arms, shoulders and back breaking out in a rash and swelling. It happened fast and I'm so glad he was here bc he said his mouth felt like it was on fire and swelling. We gave benedryl and it stopped thankfully. I gave him hydrocortizone bc the swelling and rash he already had was still there but not spreading. I then had him take an epsom salt bath with baking soda for 15 minutes. After that he was a lot better, swelling down, rash almost gone. He was about the leave the house for football where they are outside on the field at a school with no nurse, etc. so thank God he was home.
We're still not sure what caused it. I'm worried about him and just feel like I'm at my wits end too. Food allergies are ruling our lives, I'm still putting in so much time to try and heal my youngest vaccine injury, our middle child has sensory issues that have resurfaced this month to a new level and I'm dealing with a lot of health issues and I'm just exhausted by it all. All of us are trying to hard to heal our bodies and be healthy but it's just so difficult. He was the one kid, the one person, in this house I didn't have to worry about when it came to food....sigh.
One good thing (if you can call it good....) is that dealing with and trying to figure out an allergic reaction is MUCH easier with a teenager than a toddler. It was so different having him tell us what he had and how he felt. Toddlers who can't describe or give accurate info makes this whole allergy thing a lot harder....it made me realize it will get easier as they get older.
Re: I feel like throwing in the allergy white towel.
I'm sorry {{HUGS}}
i complain about one child's allergy all the time and i can't imagine how stressful it is to have to be so worried about everyone in your family.
It's so scary to think that a person's allergy can come out at any point in life.
Was your 14-year old son ever tested for allergies?
hugs!
You completely amaze me! You are so educated and knowledgable about food and are so creative about meals. I only have to deal with one child (so far) and I freak out and don't have half the energy and creativity you have.
I am so sorry to hear about your teenager and his "new" allergy. I really hope you can figure out what caused the swelling and hives. I agree that it is good he is older and can talk and verbalize how he is feeling. But even though he can do that, it doesn't make the frustration over allergies any easier.
You are doing an amazing job!
I can't blame you! You have a lot to manage - I can only imagine it must get to be overwhelming.

(((hugs))) I felt the same way when we became 5 for 5 with special diets. We try to keep our sense of humor about it but there are definitely those "white towel" days.
