Baby Names

How would you spell nickname?

Were naming our baby girl Eliana ( El - ee - ah - na ) and I wanted to call her Ellie for short . Is there any other way to spell Ellie besides the obvious without people mispronouncing it? Were already having issues when people read the name they pronounce it Elaina or Eli-ANN-a. I don't want to add any other letters to Eliana because she's already going to have a long enough name without added letters. I was thinking Eli, but don't want people calling her E-Lie or something like that . What do you guys think is the best spelling to go with ?

Re: How would you spell nickname?

  • I'm sure that most people would pronounce her name E-Lie if you spelled it Eli...I think Ellie is fine. If you want it to "match" her name,  would it be too bad just to add just one L to Eliana?

  • I think Ellie is really the only option.  Like you said, Eli is E-Lie.  Elie looks kind of strange and Elle is L.  On the plus side, whenever I see the name Eliana, I pronounce it exactly as you intend to :)

  • Alright well its settled! Thats what I thought but just wanted to see =) Thanks for the help ladies. I loved the name when I picked it, I still do now just everytime I think Ellie I think about either Ellie the Elephant or Smelly Ellie. Both courtesy of my jackass of a sister who as soon as I told her the name started coming up with things to ruin it for me! hahaha oh well what can you do!

    Not Eli.

I would just spell it Ellie.  There is no reason it needs to match Eliana exactly.

  • Ellie. I don't think there are too many options.

Agreed. Ellie is the best option, but if you must be different, I guess you could drop the 'e' at the end. Eli would definitely be pronounced E-lye

  • I know an Eliana and an Elana (Eh-lah-na) who both go by Ellie with two L's.  Go for it!  Beautiful name :)

  • I definitely wouldn't spell it Eli.  People wouldn't pronounce that right at all.  I think Ellie is your only option.
