Nighttime feedings for working parents

For the moms going back to work, are you coordinating with your SO to do the nighttime feedings?  I guess this would only be applicable for moms who FF or pump.

Since I am home until September, I currently handle all the feedings at night, but we were just discussing how we wanted to approach things once I go back to work so that we can both try to get a little bit of sleep.  Whether it's alternating nights, or him taking the 2:00 feeding and me taking the 5:00 feeding (if we have her on a regular schedule by then).

What do you (plan to) do?

Re: Nighttime feedings for working parents

  • I think I'll still do them.  She gets up sometime between 1:30-3:30 and then again between 6-7.  The thing is, I hear her stir long before he does and once I hear her cry I'm up.  I don't think I'd be able to sleep through him feeding her.  Maybe if I was super tired I'd ask him to take a feeding (and warn him as we're going to bed since he sleeps with his damn iPhone and earbuds).  I haven't been napping and although I really struggle late afternoon, I think I'll be ok.  I'm just going to bed really early.

  • I do all nighttime feedings.  Typically, DH gets up and changes her diaper, then hands her to me and goes back to bed.  I'd feel awful asking him to stay up with her in the middle of the night since it can take her quite a while to get back to sleep; he works until 11:30 P.M. and has to be up at 6 A.M. for classes some mornings.

I've been back to work part-time for a week now, and I've just had to make sure that I don't stay up too late.  I go to bed around 9 or 9:30, wake up to feed DD around 1:30 (and am up for an hour or so sometimes), and then wake up at 6 to start my day.  It works for me.

  • I've been back full time for over a month now:( I wish we could alternate but my husband is a very deep sleeper and I am a very light sleeper. I will wake up regardless. I usually warm a bottle, change little one's diaper, and will wake DH every other time to feed the bottle. It's pretty exhausting with work...once in awhile I will just shake DH awake to make him do the diaper change and bottle warming himself. I wish we had a better system.
  • i would like to think we will be alternating, but i know that i will probably take them unless i'm flat out exhausted. it's kind of my time with her, since i will be away from her all day.

  • Haha! My H and I have been sharing the MOTN feedings since she was 3 weeks old. He doesn't get a sleep pass just because he's working. Even when I was EBF, he was still taking at least 2-3 nights and helping out.  That's just us, though.  We will continue to swap nights with that feeding when I go back to work in August (I'm formula feeding now).

  • My husband and I both work at the same place, regular daytime hours 8-5 except he usually goes in late and leaves late and is on call some weeks.  So when I go back to work, we'll be on the exact same schedule.

So for those who DO have him helping out with the feedings, do you find it better just to say "your turn tonight, I'll get tomorrow" and alternate the nights throughout the week?

  • I'm a light sleeper and usually wake up because of engorgement anyway.  Sometimes DH does the middle of feeding change and burps.  I don't mind.  I will miss BF and am not looking forward to pumping.

  • I do the night feeding, DH does the early morning feed.

Ours is the opposite usually. I'm awful about the MOTN feeding, but can handle the 5am one :)   Sometimes we switch.

You could also switch days, meaning DH is up with baby on Monday, and you take Tuesday.

  • We have the same system every night and it works really well for us.  He's a night owl taking evening classes, I'm a morning dove off to work by 7.  We started it around 3/4 weeks.  LO is BF so I always make sure to pump enough to have a bottle ready to go in the fridge.  LO usually eats sometime between 9-10.  That's all me.  Once she's done, I pump one last time then I'm upstairs to bed.  DH keeps LO downstairs holding her or in her R&P until he's ready for bed or after she eats, around 1 or 2.  Then he comes up with her and puts her in her crib or R&P in our room.  She'll usually sleep until 5 when it's then again my turn.  I feed, diaper (if necessary) pump then put her back down to sleep til about 8.  I can usually sleep soundly from about 11:00-5.  DH sleeps from about 2-8ish.  It works sooo well for us.
