I am considering using CD, but I am not very educated on them. Pros and Cons? Which brands are better than others? What are must haves if I choose to use them? And are they really cost effective?
I can't speak from personal experience, since my baby hasn't been born yet (6 weeks to go!), but here are some websites that helped me when I was looking in to CD.
As far as brands go, it's hard to say what will work for your baby. I have several different brands and types, but the majority are bumGenius pockets and AIO's, because they are apparently very trim compared to other brands (ie: fit under pants better) and have good reviews. Again, though, what works for one baby may not work for another. The good news is if you try one brand and you don't like them, you can sell them and try something else!
For a wee little one, I'd just an all in one fitted and once they grew out of those, I'd get some trial packages to see what works best for you.
we mainly used bum genius (i bought special edition with fleece lining) and then moved on to to add some rumparoos (super cute and they make little joeys for wee ones) blueberries/swaddlebees, knickernappies, a few fuzzibuns and maybe one or two others.
But like everything baby, each kiddo is different and what works for some work for others.
We tried prefolds (had a service) at newborn and my son hated them. I moved on to g-diapers with a few aio bumgenius until he was bigger.
I thought I'd hate pockets, but I really love them.
Good luck!

Mom's Milk Boutique and Kelly's Closet have cloth diaper sampler packages where you can purchase and try a variety of one-size diapers to see which will work best for your LO. We mostly have BumGenius 4.0 snaps. DD is long and lean and they work best for us. We also love Blueberry dipes (the minky ones are really soft!) and Rump A Rooz. They are an investment up front but they do save money in the long run. Also, you should find a CD-specific detergent. I think a lot of us on the board use Rockin' Green but Charlie's is also popular. Mom's Milk and Kelly's Closet both sell CD-friendly detergent. A little goes a long way, so don't let the prices scare you. I believe Whole Foods and Sprouts also have CD-friendly detergent, but don't quote me on that.

I will quote you on that b/c Sprouts sells Country Save, which is what we use as our CD safe detergent.

And, the gals on the cloth diaper board are very helpful.
