Having a cat has NOTHING to do with getting pregnant. She's probably confusing this with the fact that toxoplasmosis can pose a risk to already pregnant women and it can be spread by infected cat litter (which is RARE) amongst other ways.

You can pass along the information to your mom or anyone else who tries to tell you that. There's also a silly old rumor where it claims cats suck the air out of newborns as they sleep lol. Also not true. No need to get rid of kitty to have a baby.

If you have already been exposed to the parasite before you get pregnant, you will not likely pass it to the baby. As far as it having any effect on fertility.....I do not know of, and did not find anything supporting that. Toxoplasmosis can be a HUGE problem if you contract the parasite while your pregnant though. HTH
My mom said that I am not getting pregnant because we have to cats...ugh...I don't think so..but of course she put it in my mind so I just wanted to confirm. Any thoughts?
You should first learn the differences between to/too/two...
...a cat cannot prevent you from becoming pregnant.
As someone in the veterinary field this is one of the misconceptions that drives me BATTY!
The likelihood of a cat having Toxo is very slim and if you have an indoor cat it is non-existent. Also the egg needs to mature (24-48 hours) in the box before becoming infective so scooping every day makes your chances of getting Toxo from your indoor/outdoor cat almost nothing. You are more likely to get Toxo from the garden or uncooked meat than from your cat.
I have 3 indoor cats and no fear they will cause me or my future baby harm. Some people just don't like cats and will take any excuse to have people get rid of them. If you have any questions about your pets or their health call your vet they are more than happy to discuss these things with you. Vets spend several months, yes months, on parasites when medical doctors get about 3 lectures. Not saying medical doctors are wrong, but your vet knows animals and what they carry.

It's not a problem pre-pregnancy. Your OB will test for it once you're pregnant. It's possible you already have it and your body has created antibodies, in which case your doc will probably tell you it's OK to clean the litterbox while pregnant. But it's always OK to tell DH that the doc said he has to do it!

Yep- I agree. In fact, if you are worried you can have the doc test for it now before you are pregnant. My doc just recommended that I not clean the litter box (for my 3 indoor cats), but that if I did use gloves and wash my hands immediately. She also recommended wearing gloves when cooking/preparing raw meat and when working in my flower garden. That's it. She also confirmed that it is pretty rare to get.

Thanks Liz!
For anyone who doesn't want to click the link, I'll sum up:
1. Your cat has to ingest the baddies, usually by eating infected rodents. Extremely unlikely in indoor-only cats, unless you feed them raw meat (this is not the stuff in a can).
2. The poop has to sit around for a few days for the baddies to grow bad-ness that would hurt you/baby.
3. You have to eat the poop.
4. Let me repeat that. YOU HAVE TO EAT THE POOP.*
*Or touch the poop and not wash your hands and transfer poop baddies to something you eat or drink.
Because I know the first thing I do after changing the cat box is stick my fingers in my mouth without washing them.
