Do peas bind LO's?

H hasn't poo'ed in 36 hours. He usually goes 3-4 times a day bwe started solids a week ago and had no problems with butternut squash. He's had 3 days of peas and I think it might be backing him up. I was going to give him pears next to see if that helps. He is also EBF. He is farting up a storm as I type but no poo. Who knew baby farts could be so gosh darn cute?!

  • Lmao at cute baby farts...lol!  It kills me when I have to check with DH to see if the fart was from my big ol' hubby or my teeny little babe :)

I can't help you with the peas thing, Jones wouldn't touch pureed veggies.   I'm sure the pears will help get things moving though!

  • Yea peas and almost all the other veggies I have found to be pretty binding. If the pears don't work, give him a little container of stage 1 prunes. Works VERY well. Almost too well. ;)

We always have a stash of stage 1 prunes on hand too!  I found that just a half container mixed with yogurt usually does the trick.  A whole tub usually works a little too well in this house.

  • Almost ALL EBF babies have some troubles with constipation when they start solids...their bowel habits are changing anyway, and when you add the solids, things get pretty backed up.

Caroline once went 11 days with no BM (before she started solids) and it was perfectly normal.

If he keeps having trouble, Dr. Sears recommends 1 tbsp of flax seed meal...and it works like a charm!  We have used it with great success...

I'd give him a try on the prunes first...or even blueberries...blueberries are always guaranteed to produce a BM around here!

Peas don't typically cause binding or constipation.  Peas are high in fiber and are actually one of the foods that can help with constipation (fiber aids in it).  Other foods high in fiber to help with constipation include: peaches, pears, plums, spinach, apricots and, of course, prunes.

Wholesome baby food has some info on constipation and what to avoid / have if it's an issue.  https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/constip.htm (sorry it's not clicky but I'm on a mac).

That said, introducing solids can cause some reactions just b/c they're so new to LOs systems!  GL! I hope he works it out soon.

  • Thanks ladies! He actually had a colossal poop a few hours later. Maybe his baby farts aren't so cute after all!
