Boston Babies

TTC in Salem!

Hi there!  I am new to the board and am hoping you can help me.  After recently moving from Boston to the suburb of Salem, my husband and I have decided to start trying to have a baby!  I would like to start taking prenatal vitamins, and I'd like to make an appointment with an OB/GYN.  My previous gyno is not also an OB, so I am not sure where to go.  Plus, she's in Boston proper, so I'm not sure if I should go to a doctor in Boston (my husband and I both work downtown), or if I should see someone in Salem....it seems that getting to appointments where I work would be easier, and plus the selection of doctors is better in Boston I imagine than in Salem, but Salem is about an hour drive from Boston, so what would happen when it's time to deliver?  I am wondering if someone can give my your thoughts on the above, and help me answer two questions: 1) where should I go to get my vitamins in Boston, and 2) can you recommend a good OB/GYN in the Boston area?  Thank you!

Re: TTC in Salem!

  •  I live in Peabody and my obgyn is in beverly.  I would probably pick a Dr. in Boston if i were you.  depending on how your pregnancy is, you might have a lot of appt's.  i have to go every 2wks and then every week after 30wks (but i'm high risk).   Salem to Boston shouldn't take an hour, only in rush hour...but even then, i'm sure you'd make it in time.

oh, and i've just used the Target brand prenatals w/ both pregnancies. my Dr. was fine w/ them, no need to get an expensive prescription! good luck!

  • Hi!  I'm in Danvers and my obgyn is Essex County in Beverly.

We are choosing to have our baby at Beverly Hospital as it will be easier to get there once I go into labor.  We toured the hospital and really loved the facility.

I agree with PP that if you're worried about taking some time off for drs. appointments, it might be more convenient to have an OBGYN in Boston but if your job is somewhat flexible and you do not have a high-risk pregnancy, I've found it to be ok so far.  I generally make my appointments either first thing in the morning (before 9am) or after 4:30pm so I take minimal time off of work (I work in Cambridge)

  • I'm delivering at Salem Hospital. I love the hospital and I love all the doctors there.

For prenatal vitamins I just use the the One-A-Days.

  • I am in Marblehead and had my baby at BIDMC in Boston and will have my second there too.  My pregnancies have both been fairly high risk and I have a lot of confidence in my doctor and the specialist I see.  My doctor practices 1/2 a mile from Longwood medical in Brookline - Brenda Baker..  It did not take too long to get to the city...plus I work in Cambridge, so appointments have been easy to get to.
