Making carrots

I'm making carrot for lo and they've been steaming for about 30 min. now and they are still pretty hard.  How long did you have to steam them for before they were able to be pureed?

Re: Making carrots

  • I heard that you are suppose to remove the nitrates from carrots and spinach before giving it to the baby. I have no idea how to do that but just wanted to let you know. Sorry I am not answering your question.

FWIW- I just bought jar carrots since they supposedly have the nitrates removed already.

  • Yeah it is not really recommended to make carrots at home because of the nitrates.  Check www.wholesomebabyfood.com.  I make almost all of my food, but I bought carrots.

I was just reading that too. Sounds strange but it was on a few different sites.

I cut the carrots first into like 1/2 in think slices...did you do that? Once I do that I usually do like 3 large carrots and it takes about 15 -20 minutes. That was my first time making carrots as well....we are moving on this week to another solid!

Thank you! I hope that article helped. There is a lot of misinformation regarding nitrates and as you read, it's from a lot more than just carrots (spinach, green beans, beets...)

I don't know if you looked at the recipes for carrots, but it said not to use the water from steaming to thin out the pureed carrots.  From what I have read, it's best to freeze the pureed food as is and thin it when you thaw it for each feeding. If you're doing that, it's not an issue anyway!

  • my baby food book has me boil them to remove the nitrates. it also says that you should wait until 7mos to feed carrots when they can better digest any leftover nitrates in them
