Just had my IUD put in.

I don't know if this is just my experience or if it feels this way for everyone, but besides giving birth (which wasn't really that uncomfortable considering I had my lovely epidural) this was the most painful experience of my life.  The doctor was really nice and gentle but it felt like it took FOREVER (maybe because her helper nurse was almost 100 and clearly didn't know what she was doing). I had HORRIBLE cramping during and after. I was nauseated after too, and shaking. I could barely stand up, and had to sit in the waiting room for about 15 minutes before I felt capable of driving home. When I got home I immediately went to the medicine cabinet and took a left over percocet from my postpartum pills, and fed M and handed her to daddy while I napped. I had this done at 2 and its almost 5 now and I'm feeling much better. God I hope that this thing stays put and doesn't have any complications, because I'm not going through all of that pain for nothing. I am dredding getting it taken out in 2-5 years (I know it lasts 10, but we might want a baby before then.) Next time I might just get the Implanon and deal with the hormones, or beg the doctor to sedate me!

    Thanks for sharing, I've been seeing too many of these experiences and now I'm worried about getting one. I'm thinking about just going back on the pill to save myself from the pain of an IUD. Which one did you get?

    I was really hoping this would say "it didn't hurt at all!  I'm so happy!" because I'm terrified of getting an IUD.  Sorry you are hurting. :(

    I had a similar experience.  I am actually contemplating calling the doctor back.  I had mine put in about a month ago.  I have had consistant cramping and bleeding ever since.  If this is how it's going to be always, I am having it taken out.  Not worth it.  Hope things turn around for you!  I know others have had no problems...

    Just curious did you have to have AF to have it put in.  My dr won't do it unless you are on your period, so I just wonder if that makes it easier or harder. I keep going back and forth on what I want to do, I can't do hormones so it is either paragard or condoms but I don't want anything if it will be painful.

    I had my paragard put in on the 5th, and I had severe cramping during insertion but it stopped after the doctor was finished and I had mild bleeding for about four days....

    My doctor put mine in without me having AF....
    so it may be different with all doctors.

    Oh wow. I didn't even think to ask my OB if the insertion hurt. I have an appointment next week, and now I'm really scared.

    BabyWillMake3: I had ParaGard, it's the only non hormonal IUD that I know of. Iris427: I was hoping I could say that too, but I had to let everyone know, it is just as uncomfortable as you imagine it will be. I have confidence your experience may be better considering you went natural. You got more balls than me. Melandjudd: I'm EBFing so if we had to wait for my AF it might be a while. I took a pregg test before my visit and they did it when I got my BFN.

    PP- my doc suggested taking a left over pain pill before the appointment if I did decide to get on, then she decided she would just put me under general. Still it wouldn't hurt to take a pain pill if you have any on hand and someone to drive you.

    I had one put in a few years ago and did post my experience here before, but it sucked.  I could have typed up the OP, actually, right down to having to wait in the waiting room because of how I felt.  It hurt SO bad getting it put in (also had Paragard), but I was thinking maybe that was just because I had never been pregnant before... now I'm not so sure.  I also bled for about a month afterwards, had huge clots and ended up with a consistently timeable 3 week long period.  3 weeks of bleeding, 2 weeks of no bleeding, back to 3 weeks of bleeding.  One of those 3 weeks would be super heavy.  My body did not respond well to having a foreign object in my uterus.  I *did* like how effective it was, as birth control.  I did not like everything else.  I won't be getting another.

    Currently... Pregnant with mo/di BOY TWINS!  Due September 15.  Latest induction will be 37w.

    God I hope I don't have 3 week long periods! Dr said to expect heavier periods and worse cramping but nothing about longer periods. Ick!

    I'm sorry, I didn't want to scare anyone. I thought it might be uncomfortable, like getting my membranes swept. Nope, much worse. The cramps were slightly less painful than early labor ctx. But I feel much better now. It only lasted about 2-3 hrs.

    I may have had a drug-free birth but I'm still a huge wuss when it comes to medical procedures!  Especially gynecological ones.

    If you have a support person to hold your hand I'd bring them, and maybe have someone watch the kids. Definitely have motrin or Tylenol on hand and remember to breathe!

    Just had my Paraguard put in and after reading this I was terrified. I had no pain BUT it fell out immediately after being put in and she had to put it back in and now I need to keep checking to ensure I don't feel the device. Which requires me feeling u there... Gross I have had enough people up there in the past few months!! I also now need an u/s in 2 weeks to check placement.
