anyone using a sippy cup yet?

I'm waiting until 6 months to start BLW for solids and DD is on 99% BM, bottles during the day while I'm at work and BF when I'm at home.  She's super interested in watching us eat and drink so last night when she was reaching for my cup while I was drinking, I held it up to her mouth and let her take tiny sips of water.  I know that for EBF babies water isn't necessary as BM is very hydrating, and I was also told that water can mess up osmosis in their digestive systems.  But I'm starting to think that we're close enough to 6 mos that an oz of water here and there probably won't hurt.  I think she'd probably love to play with a sippy cup, given how excited she was to drink from my cup last night.  Have any of you tried it yet?  Any pointers on the best kind of cup?

  • I just gave DS one to try today, and he seemed to be able to get a little out, but I had to hold it for him.  I'll continue to offer with a little bit of water every day to practice.  I have the tommee tippee brand.

  • We actually just bought one yesterday to try with BM.  She hasn't been taking a bottle lately, and I heard that some EBF babies can go straight to the sippy cup once they are about 4 months old.  So...we experimented last night.  She put it right in her mouth (like she does with everything!) but didn't get a whole lot of milk actually down (well...just down the front of her shirt).  Think it might take a few times, but I have a hunch it might work better than bottles for us.

We got the Playtex trainer kind with the soft spout.

  • I got DD one a few days ago and she hasn't really gotten the hang of drinking from it but she loves trying. I got a Nuby cup with a soft spout and 2 handles, as soon as we gave it to her she grabbed the handles, brought it to her mouth and started chewing on the spout.

  • DS is VERY interested in watching us drink. I just bought a sippy for him to play with and to see what happens. I let him 'practice/play' with it while in his high chair waiting for his solids. So far he likes to grab it and chew on it, but I don't think he can quite get anything out-so it's a toy for now lol. We got the Nuk learner orthodontic one with handles. I plan on getting the Tommee tipee one without handles and see which he prefers.

  • We are practicing every day with just water. So far the Nuby has had the most success.

  • Shoot fire, I got reprimanded by older women when I gave a sippy to my older two at 10 months!! IMO, a sippy should be introduced when they can hold it themselves. One of the best sippy cups I've encountered is by Boon. I LOVE it, it's super easy for children to hold, and the mouth is easy for babies to start getting used to the shape.

My older two didn't really care for sippy cups until they were 11 mo. They just liked the bottle til then, and really, that's just fine. But if you want to try a sippy this early, I suggest a little breastmilk if you have any expressed or maybe a little goatmilk since it's closest to human milk. (Closer IMO than formula.)

In this hot weather, it's really important to keep our LO's hydrated. That may be why we see breastfed babies wanting to eat more often in the day- that's how they get more liquid in their system. It's not a growth spurt or them trying to be irritating, that's just how they get something to drink.

  • We tried a Nuby one at my mom's house last week and K LOVED it! He was able to hold it on his own and just went to town. We put BM in it for him to try and he ate almost a full meal out of it.

I'm afraid to put BM in a sippy cup as DD is already frustrated when nursing because it's not as fast as the bottles she gets during the day when I'm at work. I think if she got BM in a sippy cup she'd never be patient enough to nurse :(

  • I look at sippy cups everytime I'm out but didn't know if it was silly getting one or not. B tries grabbing our cups all the time. Guess I will give it a try.

  • DD just started taking a few sips from a sippy cup this week.  We use the Nuk brand with the soft spout and handles.  We do BM in a bottle so from her sippy cup she gets water since our pedi recommended an ounce or two a day for taste.  She doesn't drink much from it so it's just a little exposure at a time for practice.
