XP: Update on daycare concern (LONG)

Here's an update on my post the other day about discovering several of LO's bottle nipples had slits in then.  Sorry, it's been a busy few days with no time to update.

DH took LO in Monday morning and first mentioned it to one of the ladies in her room.  She said she knew nothing about anyone doing this, which was the response we assumed we would get.  DH let her know I was extremely upset about it and he would be calling the director once she got in.

He called her later that morning and let her know about our discovery.  DH went about it from the approach of we weren't trying to point blame on anyone but this was so serious we need to address it with her.

DH went through how we discovered this and if it were something our dishwasher had done, then why didn't they bring it up to us?  It was so obvious when I fed her that nearly 2 oz poured out within a matter of seconds of tipping it up.   He let her know they were clear slits in the nipples like what you would get if you poked the end of a knife or scissors through.  All signs pointed to someone doing this themselves.  She only gets 3 bottles a day during her time at daycare and an occasional one on the weekends, the rest of the time I nurse her.  I also have plenty bottles that they only get used about once a week, so these bottles have only been washed a handful of times in the short time she has been in day care.  I don't poke any of those cleaning brushes thru the nipple to clean (probably should, but I don't), I simply put them in one of those dishwasher cages so it really didn't make sense how they could crack this soon.  They also do not rinse our bottles out so I don't see how they could have been swapped with someone else's nipples.  I could see maybe one of them having an issue, but not 6 of them.  Again, all signs point to someone doing this.

He also brought up the fact that she has had some issues nursing recently which could be a result of this.  It's not caused huge issues, but the fact that it could have caused even the slightest issues was probably the most heartbreaking thing for me.

DH kept emphasizing how much we have trusted them in the almost 2 months she has been there and have felt like we have great communication with them.  He brought up that they would mention things to us such as saying the elastic on her bloomers was too tight on her legs and thought we should go up a size or cut the elastic.  This was an example of how they have freely offered other info to us, so if the bottles were damaged in the dishwasher, someone would have mentioned it to us, unless they were trying to hide something.

The director assured DH she was going to address it immediately with the workers in her room as well as all others in the building in the case that someone steps in the infant room to meet ratio.  She assured us she has zero tolerance for this and if she determined it was done and by who, she would be re-evaluating their position.

I picked up LO yesterday afternoon and was real hesitant of what to say or how to act knowing DH had this conversation.  That was going to be a real test of their understanding of how big of a deal this was to us.  I didnt say too much to the lady in LO's room, just small talk.  The director grabbed me as I was walking out and expressed her apologies in the situation and wanted to do anything to make me feel better and not feel like I had to pull LO out.

Basically it comes down to that this has happened and no one can prove someone did it or that it was done in the dishwasher.  I know what I think, it's now just a matter of getting past this.  I won't forget about it for sure and also don't know what kind of resolution I was looking for.  I guess just for them to take us seriously.  I at least hope the director is really looking into it more and seeing if it's happened to others bottles to get to the bottom of it but I assume we will never hear that outcome.

We've debated on whether or not to look around at other daycares and I don't know what to do on that just yet.  It will really depend on my comfort level with them over the next week or so.  Can this happen anywhere?  Yes.  Would I have ever imagined it would happen here?  No.  I even had references from other friends here and the director is even a friend of a friend.  I almost feel like now that we've made such a big stink about it, they will be even more careful with not breaking our trust.  Not that I want special treatment or anything, I just want them to know how serious this was to us and we definitely got our point across.

(Sorry that got so long)

  • It's definitely a tough situation that you are in. It sounds at least from your account that the director is taking this issue seriously. I hope that they try to rebuild your trust. It will take time.

  • I'd be really torn. I'm a big fan of second chances but it sounds like who ever did it isn't stepping forward and the director is still trying to say that it probably wasn't the staff. For me, second chances only come about when the person who is at fault admits their fault and makes it known it won't happen again. It doesn't sound as though that's the case... either way, loads of luck!

  • sorry you're dealing with this. maybe this is too much, but could you check with other parents and see if it happened to anyone else? if someone did it to your bottles, is it possible they did it to someone else too? if so, maybe that could help you figure out who did it based on who was working.

i dunno... stirring it up again may just make things worse.

  • It's so hard to change daycare providers on both you and on your LO.  Since you know the director, that swayed my opinion a little to suggest you TRY to stay.

Perhaps you "test" them?  Put all new nipples on the bottles (which I'm sure you've already done).  Advise the dirctor that the nipples are all brand new.  Ask that they not use the dishwasher on your bottles, heck let them give them back to you dirty and you can wash them yourself to guarantee the workers are not damaging them in the cleaning process.  And let the director know you've done all of this, and if a single nipple comes out sliced in the future, you WILL be finding a new daycare provider.

Perhaps that idea is slightly at the expense of your LO having to deal with another cut nipple (if they do it again).  That's the only thing that might keep me from doing the "test".  But perhaps that'd be easier than finding a new place, which you will also have a tough time trusting because of past experience.  And then your LO will have to re-adjust to the new care providers etc.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this, it breaks my heart for you.  It's hard enough to spend the day away from our LO's, but to have to worry that they aren't being properly cared for makes it 1000 times worse!

  • thanks for the update, I was so mad for you when I read the original post. My first thought was that you should yank LO out of there NOW! However, if this is the only incident (not trying to downplay it's seriousness) then maybe just be extra aware. I worked in a daycare as an aide for years while I was in HS and college and have seen first-hand how one stupid person can ruin the reputation of a place.  Hopefully, if it was done intentionally, it was just a stupid decision of one person and doesn't reflect the care that your LO will get going forward!  Good luck!!
