reflux symptoms

For those of you with LOs that have been diagnosed with reflux, what were the symptoms?  What made you finally ask the pedi about it?  Is the medication helping?

DD has been spitting up big time the last day or two and gets quite upset afterwards.  She's also waking up spitting up and seems pretty uncomfortable a few minutes after eating.  She always wants to eat after she spits up.  I'm thinking I should call her doctor in the morning since this is new and she's unhappy.

Re: reflux symptoms

  • LO has bad reflux. I became worried when she was projectile vomitting all over. It started out with her spitting up quite a bit after eating and turned into full out screaming fits. She would pull herself off the boob crying or spit up then want the boob more. (It lessens the pain of the reflux.) Then she started throwing up and it would land all over the place, more than a foot in front of her and out of her nose. If your concerned just call the pedi. there is quite a difference between a spitting up baby and a reflux baby. If she's unhappy call.

Gabriella was fussy and noticeably uncomfortable all the time. She didn't vomit at all. Instead, she would spit up and swallow it back down.

It took about a week before we noticed a difference after she started on Zantac. It's such a relief to see her happy and calm again. All smiles! :)

You should talk to your pediatrician about your concerns. Reflux in babies is pretty common so that could be the case.

  • I called the doctor as soon as LO's spit up went from what i would consider normal spit up to soaking me when I would hold him. When it started coming out of his nose I freaked out as well and that's ultimately where I drew the line. As the PP said, our LO also would swallow his spit up which breaks my heart. The zantac makes things "sting" less when they come up. He does still spit up but not in the volumes he use to. There's also techniques you can do while feeding (holding LO upright, waiting to burp, and keeping them at an angle for about 30 minutes after a feeding) that should provide your LO some comfort until you can get in to see the doctor.

  • The biggest symptoms for her were projectile vomiting, tons of spit up, lack of weight gain, groaning/grunting and arching after eating.  The pedi diagnosed her at 2w after her failure to gain weight along with the rest of her symptoms.

We started with Zantac and her spitting stopped almost immediately, but the groaning/grunting continued.  She's now on Prilosec and she only grunts and groans when it's close to the time to give her the meds again.

  • Thanks!  It sounds like all the same symptoms, except for the projectile vomiting.  She has an appointment on Monday,
