prenatal pilates

Has anyone practiced pilates throughout their pregnancy? (Did a search, but didn't see anything on this). I'm only 5 weeks so I'm completely fine with mat and reformer classes at this point. But I've read various things about not being on your back for very long (thus prohibiting  a lot of reformer and mat positions). Do people switch over to Chair workouts? I know a balance ball will probably work too, but that's so limiting in some ways.

thanks!

Re: prenatal pilates

  • I've been taking pilates for a year now.  Just talked to my instructor this week and she said at 16 weeks she'll help me modify so I won't be on my back.  I may have to modify other positions too, but she'll be there to help me out.

  • I did reformer classes all the way up until my due date.  My OB said it was fine since I had been practicing Pilates for several years before getting pregnant. You can do the back exercises up until the end so long as you don't feel uncomfortable... it is all about listening to your body.  My teacher just modified the exercises for me when needed. Additionally, my plan, if needed, was to move from the reformer to the chair if laying on my back was too much, she also had a wedge I could have used.   If you are doing back exercises you will want to avoid doing too many in a row.  Also, I did not take the mat classes past my second trimester.  There are too many people in the mat class to get the attention I needed when it came to modifying exercises.  Some of the exercises that were harder to do once I hit around 30 weeks included climbing tree (on the box), Jack Rabbit (I could not get as low), and I eliminated all exercises that required me to lay on my stomach once I started to show.

Exactly!  I am 38 weeks and still going to mat classes.  I just do different things during the stomach exercises and modify where necessary.  My doctor is also fine with this and has even told me on a few occasions how strong my abs are.  (It makes it harder for her to feel the baby's head...)  Good luck!

  • Great to hear; thanks everyone. I spoke to my Reformer instructor yesterday and she said that around 14 weeks I'll start using the wedge as needed and she already has me modifying a bit. She says it's easier to overstretch right now. I'm also going to take a few private sessions at different stages, to learn how to modify the mat--which at time will mean doing something completely different, I know, since mat classes are so large--and to try out the chair.
