effacement expertise please

So I had my 38 week appointment today, and the doctor said I am 80 percent effaced but my cervix is not dialated.

I'm a first timer, so I know my cervix may not dialate in advance (or it could and I could not go into labor for three more weeks).

If you're well-effaced, is that an good indicator that you'll get there sooner than later?? Is it better indictator than the cervix dialation?

You know, the doctors give the wishy washy answer for this.....I just wish I could predict!!

Re: effacement expertise please

  • Sorry to tell you but it's pretty meaningless information. Neither effacement nor dilation reliably indicates when you will start labor.

  • Well my appointment 2 days ago I was 4.5 cm dilated and 100% effaced.... and I still haven't had my baby. I don't really know, but I don't think effacement is a good indicator just like dilation isn't, *shrugs*.

  • My doctor said it is all kind of meaningless b/c all women can walk around at different levels of effacement and dilation and not go into labor.  I am 50% effaced and 1cm dilated and have been for 2.5 weeks.  He told me to just keep coming in til I have a baby in my arms.

I of course am having less BH than I was having at 30-34 weeks which is annoying, but he said not to worry the baby was going to come out anyway.

This!  My doctor hasn't even measured me yet because she considers it so useless.  Not a very helpful answer I suppose.

  • Thanks ladies. Darn, I was hoping it meant I would go this weekend, but as we know we're not on our own schedules anymore...

  • From what I understand, it's common for FTMs to efface prior to dilating. So it means that your cervix is STARTING to change... but who knows how long it will take? You could go from 0cm dilated to 4cm in 2 days or it could take 3 weeks. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

Sorry, OP... Hang in there! :)

Neither effacement or dilation are good indicators of when you'll go into labor.

Sucks, but there is really nothing that predicts labor well. BH contracts, effacement, dilation, dropping, nesting/energy bursts, weird digestive issues, etc all mean nothing other than your body is preparing to go into labor in the next 4 weeks.

    This, as others have stated.

I was 1-2/50% & I went into labor on my own.

  • I hate not knowing either. I had my appointment yesterday as well and I was on70% effaced with a fingertip of dilation happening. So like any cranky ready to be done pregnant lady I gave him a look of frustration and he did say that ***most*** women go into labor somewhere between 70-80% effacement. BUT he then quickly said that I could still be a few days late. Confused I hate usless information. I'm ready to be done! I think I was more frustrated that he was ignoring other questions that I had. Thank goodness he isn't my regular dr or I would have been really upset.

Good luck OP!  Hopefully things get moving for you! I'm putting all my marbles on the full moon this friday Wink

  • Though it is not an accurate indicator, my OB said that she is more interested in effacement progress, rather than dilation as far labor goes. She says it still can;t be predicted, but she feels effacement is more of a sign of progress for the cervix, rather than the dilation.

  • Yeah. Sorry, it doesn't mean any thing. I've been 100% effaced and 1cm dilated for over 3 weeks, and no signs of baby yet.
