migraines after baby?

For a few nights this week, I've woken up in the middle of the night with what seems to me like a migraine. I take a few ibuprofen, and eventually fall back asleep. I don't think the ibuprofen makes the headache go away, but it takes enough of the edge off so that I can fall asleep again, and when I wake up it's gone.

It's killer though. I used to have migraines years ago, but haven't in a long time. Is it possible with all the hormone changes/body changes after baby that they could be back again?

Any one suffer from migraines? Is there anything safe to take while BFing?

Re: migraines after baby?

  • I don't normally get migranes but I've had a few doosies lately that made me want to claw my brain out. I've been taking 600mg of Ibuprofen since that is what they gave me at the hospital. My doctor did give me a prescription for percosit (sp?) so I am hoping that is safe but I'm too afraid to take it. I figured my headaches were from being so damn sleep deprived.

  • I got migraines before I got pregnant, but luckily only one while pg and none since.  Sleep deprivation can be a trigger for sure.  Ask your doctor what is safe to take.  You can also try putting ice on the back of your head and heat on your neck and shoulders at the same time.  The heat differential will sometimes short circuit the blood vessel changes that underlie a migraine and take the edge off.

  • I had migraines from birth control pills and my period, so it make sense pregnancy hormones could bring them on. One thing I've learned is to take ibuprofen as soon as you feel it coming on, not when you're in a ton of pain. When I do it holds it off, and and I can take lower dose.

If you want to go drug free, a warm or cool washcloth on your forehead can help.

  • Thanks ladies! I think it's just crazy how hormones can screw with our bodies! Ugh!

Ugh.. Your telling me! I have a postpartum rash all over my body because of "hormones" I go to the doctor in an hour. Maybe he'll just knock me out for a bit and let me get some sleep. I bet that will cure everything!!

Ibuprofen never works for my migraines, I have to take excedrin(sp?) migraine or Tylenol with a cup of coffee or coke, something about the way they work is just better for me. I also tell DH that I need 20 min- 30 min to just lay down (if he's home) because it's better for me to lay down for half an hour and get past it, than to let it turn into a full blown migraine and I end up in the hospital.

Mine are for sure trigged by hormones, caff, and sleep. I need to be sure I don't get too much or not enough or any. Of course I can't control hormones but I can the other too.
