Pregnant after a Loss

Scared about preterm delivery (vent)

So I've been having lots of BHs for the last 2 weeks. At first they thought it was a UTI but my culture was negative and the BHs didn't slow down after a course of antibiotics. I went in to L&D 2 days ago and my cervical legnth was 3.5 transvaginally so they think I'm just fine.

But these BHs are the pits! I get them throughout the day but more at night time. Sometimes they are every 3-5 mins and then they space out. Each one lasts 10-30 secs. They're really uncomfortable but not painful.

My main complaint is that they are messing with my mind so much. I'm so scared to deliver this baby before viability or dangerously early and as a pediatrician I know all too well what that means. My hospital actually doesn't resuscitate babies born before 25 weeks and I have these recurring nightmares about delivering at 24w. It makes me so panicky...

For all you ladies with late losses, I'm so sorry if this post is hard for you. I can't even fathom the pain of losing this little guy right now. I have so much respect for your stregnth and resilience.

I guess I need my PGAL ladies to talk me off the freak out ledge...

Re: Scared about preterm delivery (vent)

  • A good friend of mine had frequent BH starting around 12 weeks for the whole pg and gave birth at full term to a healthy little boy without any PTL issues. (She did go in a couple of times around 38-39 weeks thinking she was in labor but both of those were just wishful thinking :) )

I'd keep a good eye on them but not panic just yet. It's great that your cervix looks good.

I'm sure you're doing all the regular stuff already (drinking lots of water, resting a lot) -- hope your OB can give you some reassurance and/or figure out how to help them ease off.

    Hang in there!

how nerve wracking!  I have no advice but I'm hoping you keep your baby in as long as is necessary.  Doesn't it suck to know so much about all this?  It just leads to more freaking out...for me anyway.

  • I have been having constant BH since 12 weeks. My cervix is still long and closed. I'm just told to rest and drink more water..

I hope they go away for you and you have a long pregnancy

Wow! You must be a BH pro then. I think I'm approaching that, but my next goal is to try not to worry about them so much. Luckily I'm able to rest a lot now, but my OBs didn't think I should really do bed rest or anything since my cervix seems to be tolerating them. I'm drinking tons, but then when my bladder gets full it causes more BHs.

Thanks ladies for the pep talks. After all of this, this baby will probably end up being late!

  • Have they done a fetal fibronectin test for you yet? It's not an exact science, but a little swab that will tell if you may go into pre-term labor within the next few weeks. They did one for me a ways back when I was experiencing BH for a while. It definitely gave me some peace of mind.

No, they haven't brought that up yet, but I've read about it. I think they're holding out a little until I'm passed viability as well, but I may push for that if I have another bad day of constant ones. Thank you for the suggestion!

  • Hope you get some relief from them soon! That is really sad to me that your hospital doesn't resuscitate unless 25 wks. 23 weekers are born frequently and pull thru. I know that's not always the case but my husband was called out two nights ago for a 24 weeker and he was gone for 3 hrs in the middle of the night but the baby is doing well now. Makes me really sad for those parents that wouldn't get the chance of having their child.

  • I don't have any advice or experience with this, but I'm sorry you are going through it.  I can imagine how scary it would be.  Sending lots of T&Ps that LO stays put for a good long time still.

  • Im so sorry you are having such a rough time! PGAL can be so scary... My OB said its normal to have BH as early as 6 weeks if that helps at all.

Just try to drink water and take it easy!

I know... I have mixed feelings about it and if it came down to it, I would get other opinions and probably ask to be transfered. They revisit the policy frequently, but it hasn't changed as far as I know. I think part of the problem is that as a referral center and level 4 NICU they see the worst of the worst and don't see the happy situations where things work out. Hoping we don't have to struggle with this heart wrenching decision though!
