Breastfeeding

BF at work - Good Plan?

When I go back to work and pump in my tiny closet where everyone gets water from (fun times), I want to be as efficient as possible.  I refuse to give up!  In terms of storage, my plan is to take 4 bottles.  Pump into 2, store with ice pack in fridge.  Next session...pump into 2 more and store with ice pack in fridge.  Last session/end of day...combine the chilled milk into 2 bottles and use the remaining 2 for my last pumping session (Should I clean the bottles beforehand?).  What do you do for storage at work?

I took a class yesterday called Breastfeeding and Working, and she said it should be in a pinch that you store your pump parts in the fridge and then reuse, so I plan on using the wipes in between since I won't have access to a sink where I am pumping.  Are the Medela wipes my only option?

Any other tips overall?  TIA!

Re: BF at work - Good Plan?

  • Why not just combine the milk into bottles right after you pump?  Pump into two bottles, pour them into 1, then store in fridge.  It's easier to combine when it's warm because the fat tends to stick to the bottle after it's chilled.  Also, if it's going in the fridge, you probably don't need an ice pack in addition.

I may be the exception, but I don't clean my pump parts between uses.  I have had absolutely zero problems with this and I pumped with DS for 8+ months.  I would think putting them in the fridge would be fine.  I am reluctant to use wipes because they're expensive, especially if you're using a couple a day.  If you want to clean the parts, I would just wash them out in the bathroom or kitchen instead of using wipes.  I bring an extra bag (either a small lunch bag or a large ziploc) to cart my dirty pump parts around in.

  • Well the ice packs will need to go in the freezer to stay frozen.  I put the bottles in the zip bag in the fridge.

I pumped 2x/day at work when I pumped at work, that was enough for me to get plenty of milk.  I ended up buying a second set of parts so I didn't have to wash at work, but before that I used the lunch room sink.  I know people say you can put dirty parts in the fridge, but that just didn't seem sanitary to me.  No one ever commented on me washing them there.

This is exactly what I do. I keep my dirty parts in a ziplock with a paper towel in it. I keep it in the cooler, and use it throughout the day. I then sanitize every night.

I also combine the milk when it's warm, and reuse the bottles.

  • A problem... I would have to carry out my pump parts in front of students to get to a bathroom sink.  My lunch is only 23 minutes, so I don't have too much time to spare.

It's worth the expense for me (I actually figured out the cost).  If I use 2 a day, it comes to about 4.50 a week.  AND at Buy, Buy Baby, they provide spend 15 get 5 dollars off.  Then, I can get the packs of 40 for only 12.99 which will be like 3 bucks a week.  So not awful...I don't drink coffee, and people drop way more a week on Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks!  =)

Good idea with combining the warm/warm.  I won't use the ice pack...duh, but I do have a question...when bringing them home, do you put them in with the ice pack?  Thanks!!!

  • I don't bother with an ice pack for the drive home.  You can even leave milk you just pumped out at room temperature for several hours with no problems.  I only have a 20 minute drive and they've been totally fine.  I also pump and leave my parts at room temperature in my office between sessions.  If milk is fine at room temperature for up to 8 hours, then so are the pump parts in my mind.  Baby and I both doing great after 4 months of BF and 2 months of pumping at work, so it must be ok.  :)

  • What do you do with the bottle you are going to reuse at the next section?  Do you rinse it out?  Put it in the fridge?

  • I'm an elementary teacher with my own class. Here's what I do--

I leave my Madela PIS on the floor by my desk all the time. I bring all the parts home to wash each night and my pumping bra on the weekend. I wipe down the pump itself with wipes on Friday.

I bring a cooler bag with ice packs. One goes into the cooler part of my pump in the morning. My pump parts go in there between sessions. The milk is pumped into bottles,(or sometimes directly into Madela bags; I have a box at work), but I bring 6 to make it more efficient to have 3 or 4 oz bottles. Then both sides get combined and put into the cooler bag. At the end of the day the pump parts and extra bottles just go into a regular bag.

I pump before school, recess, lunch, and after school. My commute is an hour each way.

  • I pump into 2 bottles, combine them into one, and put in fridge (in the cooler that came with the pump - 2 bottles, ice pack, and pump parts).  Then 2nd session, I use the now empty bottle that I had used in the morning and one clean bottle, and then combine them.  I now have 2 full bottles, the ice pack, and the pump parts (in a ziploc bag) in the cooler, and I rinse out the 3rd bottle that doesn't fit in the cooler.  Then my 3rd session (which I've recently cut out) I use the last 2 bottles, and don't refrigerate the pump parts since I'm taking them home to wash them.

I don't use the wipes or anything, I just rinse them off with water and then refrigerate in between uses!

  • I wouldn't want the wipe stuff to get into the bottles if I can't rinse them, that just sounds gross.

Just combine each bottle after you pump and don't rinse out your parts but keep them cool. Get a big lunch tote to keep it all in the fridge during the day.
