Europe with 16mo - Carrier?

I am starting to get a little nervous!

We are going to Europe for 3wks in October for our anniversary (itinerary not decided yet but Prague, Vienna, Budapest & Germany are front runners!). We have travelled a LOT with DD (though this will be the biggest trip) and it has been no problems....just toss her in the wrap and go about the day! She would sightsee with us and fall asleep whenever she wanted. When she wanted to get out for a bit we could find a place to sit down and let her stretch out.

Now however she is walking and it feels like a whole new ballgame! She has no interest in being in a carrier.....too much to do! Plus she is getting heavy so after a few hours my back is done.

Any tips for travel with a LO in this age range? Should we think about getting an umbrella stroller (a nicer one with recline) for the trip? Any carriers that would be supportive for a 24+lb kiddo on a trip like this (we have an ergo (hate) and a few wovens).

  • We have a Pikkolo with the support belt and that is what I wore DS (back carry) in at that age. It didn't work for me (a little too stiff and just not the right fit) but the Boba is really nice for heavier kids and is very supportive. Maybe those will work better than the ergo. I find a SSC to be easier for that up-down age. A sling is also nice but only for short amounts of time at that age imo. Honestly though I could never wear DS for more than a few hours. The umbrella stroller is a struggle on cobbel stones but I would take one just in case. It may be a life saver at some point. Also you could take turns with DH. Will you DD sleep in the stroller? if so I would get the reclining one if not (like my DS) I wouldn't bother. At that age he deffinitly needed to be in a bed to sleep for his nap. So it may mean adjusting your trip and having a slower pace so you don't have a cranky kid.

A woven should work too but IMO not as easy for a kid that wants to get down and walk and then needs to be carried.

Good luck, have fun and don't stress too much. It will be different but you will figure it out and have a great time!

  • We're in London now.  We had the same debate, and ultimately brought a ring sling, Ergo, and a woven.  We decided that if worse came to worst, they have stores in most countries and we could buy a cheap stroller.

I am SO glad we didn't mess with the stroller.  The crowds are awful, and LO feels more comfortable up with me vs. getting jostled in a stroller.  Plus, nothing here is stroller friendly (all stairs)... odd, as I've seen a grand total of one Ergo, one sling, and two Bjorns while I've been here.  Everyone else has a buggy.

LO is only 11 months, but walking and about 24 lbs, so maybe similar?  We tend to use the woven.  I found the Ergo was too low for him to see over my shoulder in a back carry, and it bothers my hips in a front carry.  The ring sling works for hour long trips, tops.  We've done really well in the woven, and just have reset our expectations on how much we can see in a day. We make sure we have a good long stretch of time where he is exploring on his own two feet (very good for teaching us to slow our pace and enjoy one spot), so I retie him in maybe twice in a 3-4 hour outing.

  • We are going to Scandinavia for 3 weeks in August, after chatting with my brother who has traveled quite a bit with children, I have decided to buy an umbrella stroller for the airports, and borrow a good stroller while there (obviously not an option for everyone, but we have family there with older children).  From traveling in Europe in the past I noticed that there are a lot of strollers, and that people just carry them up and down stairs, and leave them out on the sidewalk when need be, much more child friendly, stroller friendly than the East Coast where I live.

On a side note, I highly reccomend Germany!  It's very child friendly, even the beer gardens have playgrounds and kids are welcome everywhere as long as they are behaved (all german children seemed to be, if /i closed my eyes at the zoo I could have sworn there were no kids there).

Good to know! We will be most likely flying into Germany (taking a military flight) and haven't decided how we want to spend the few weeks we are there! DD is *usually* well behaved....though now that we are hitting the toddler stage she is making her wants much more vocal! ;)

I am thinking we will take a wrap, SSC (maybe I can talk DH into something new!), and possibly a small easy stroller (we've been talking about getting a nice one for awhile...). Or I might have DH call his friend who is stationed there and see if we can buy/borrow one there for a bit! :)  This should be an interesting trip!
