night swaddling and sids

as if there aren't enough things to worry about on a daily basis, i read that 90% of SIDS deaths are before the age of 6 months. temperature should be between 60-70 degrees. we were swaddling dd at night because it seems to help her sleep better, but after reading that, we aren't going to swaddle anymore at night. am i just nuts or does this freak anyone else out too?

Re: night swaddling and sids

  • When DD started overheating in her swaddle (sweating profusely), I tried to stop swaddling her for a couple of nights.  She slept SO poorly, waking herself up constantly by jerking her arms.  We've started just using an Aden and Anais swaddling blanket to swaddle her arms at night, which seems to help.

Honestly, you can't stress about every little thing.  Obviously you want to avoid her dangerously overheating, but if you look at the statistics regarding SIDS, it's VERY rare.  Even before 6 months.

  • I don't think I am understanding your post. The room temperature should be 60-70 degrees? Where does swaddling come into play? And why was it a surprise that 90% of SIDS deaths are before 6 months?

  • After reading Kacelle's post you op makes more sense and I agree with Kacelle

yes, the room temp should be 60-70 degrees. we keep our thermostat at 75 for the house and it's comfortable. swaddling would make them warmer, making the temperature higher. i guess it's not so much a surprise that it happens before 6 months, it's just not something that has been at the forefront of my mind until yesterday when i started reading about it. then it kind of became a bit of a worry. i agree that you can't worry about every little thing. i should also mention that i read a story about a mom that lost her baby to sids at 10 weeks (dd is 9 weeks) and it just made me think about it and worry. i had never heard about A&A before yesterday and i saw a post that mentioned them. i looked up the website and will probably be ordering some.

  • a+a blankets are sold at Target too. My DD is not overheating in swaddled, but I either swaddle her in just a onsie or just a diaper - no sleepers, long pants or long sleeves.

  • We are swaddling (we're in Houston), but shes only in a onesie or sometimes just a diaper and we have our thermostat set on 70. Our electric bill will be high, but it's worth it! We use a SwaddleMe blanket and it's really not very heavy.

All of this. She gets way hotter in the carseat than she ever does swaddled in the house. I'm more worried about her overheating when we're out and about.

  • Our house is set to 73 but our rooms are on the top floor so its a little warmer. We keep the fans on in our rooms (which also helps reduce risk of SIDS) we were swaddling her in muslin cotton blankets (you dont have to shell out for a+a, you can get cheaper ones from BRU, I got mine on baby steals 3 for $20) but she would unswaddle herself in the middle of the night and I would come into her room and find her in a heap of blanket, talk about SIDS! now we use the SwaddleMe since I finally found it in the closet. I check her temp by feeling her little head. If shes too warm I turn the thermostat fan on too.

  • I've never been more paranoid about SIDS in my entire life than I am now,
A friend of mine from Highschool just lost his 7 1/2 month old Daughter in February to SIDS and it dramatically opened my eyes.
She was perfectly healthy and the happiest baby I had ever seen, and to not have an explination for her death has been so hard on them.
I keep the fans going in the house constantly (apparently it lowers the risk), let her use a paci at night (also lowers the risk), and make sure she is never too warm.
I swaddle her, and like most other moms.. she's usually kept in a onsie so she doesn't overheat.

  • Where exactly did you read that the room gas to be 60-70 degrees? The American Academy of Pediatric's official SIDS prevention report says "Avoid overheating: The infant should be lightly clothed for sleep, and the bedroom temperature should be kept comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. Overbundling should be avoided and the infant should not feel hot to the touch".

That's it. There is no official report regarding the specific temperture needed. If you are really scared, you need you read up on what is medical researched versus what is just rumor.

The full report by the AAP is found here and includes their 11 recommendations on SIDS prevention.

  • At least one of our baby care books gives a specific room temperature range but we don't have a/c and sometimes it's even 80 in there. I was freaking out until I thought about how many people in Arizona, Florida, etc don't have a/c and their babies survive. So we keep the fan going, but try not to panic. I did recently order a muslin swaddler but he's sleeping just as well without being wrapped so that may not get used.
