Oh No!! Nail clippers are dangerous :(

So I decided to clip DD's nails while she was just hanging out all peaceful-like.  She wasn't sleeping, but she was pretty relaxed.  Usually DH and I tag team the process to make it easier, but he is working loooong hours (ugh I hate July), so he is gone from about 9am-10pm every day, making it hard to do anything together.

Anywho - first nail I tried, I totally cut her :( She was bleeding and crying, and I started crying, it was such a mess.  She's fine now, but I feel so awful.  I know it was an accident, but I feel like such an idiot.  I dont know if I will ever attempt to clip those nails again.

  • don't feel too bad- i think everyone who has a kid does it at least once.  it's really easy to do when they are this small.  dh cut ds's finger when he was tiny and then couldn't do it so i was the nail cutting ninja for years.  i was so cocky about my nail cutting skills that i decided to cut dd's while we were still in the hospital (she was born with crazy long nails).  i cut her on the first nail.  ugh.  i can't even try again after that- dh has had to do it.

  • I've done this too - twice. Don't feel bad, accidents happen!

  • I did that once to my oldest! I haven't done it yet, but I've only clipped her nails once.

I know they recommend a nail file for the first few months. I never found them to be overly useful. They do make clippers with huge magnifying glasses on them! I thought about getting a pair to make it easier.

  • Guilty x 2! The first time I did it I cried and Xander didn't even wake up. The second time he did wake up and fuss but he is just fine today and no scar.. DH got so upset the second time I cut them he tried to finish for me.. two fingers later now Xander had to cuts.. we went to the file but they were still too long and he was scratching his face pretty bad. Finally I did it when he was asleep again and no cuts for a couple times.. you're aloud to not be perfect at it the first couple times, don't beat yourself up too bad :)

For what it's worth, I did find clipping half the nail and then doing the other half to be a little easier if that makes sense.

I have these, and the magnifying glass is obnoxious. Don't bother.

This! It just gets in the way and makes it way harder to cut their nails.

  • Someone gave me a pair of nail scissors and they work great!  There is a safety lip on them so you can't get too close and they are very precise!  Not expensive either!
