Is it too late to increase my supply?

The past week or so, C has drank up all his milk that I send to daycare (18-21oz) and acts hungry before I pick him up at the end of the day.  I'm only pumping around 15-18oz at work, so I am having to pump at night in order to meet his demands.  I've used up all my freezer stash.  Is it too late to try to boost my supply by getting More Milk Plus?  I already eat oatmeal and drink lots of water during the day.

  • I don't think it's too late to try something to boost your supply. One of my co-workers has a kid the same age as mine and she just started eating oatmeal to boost her supply (and she said it worked).

This doesn't really answer your question, but I'm wondering if he really needs that much. How long is he at daycare? He may be going through his 6-month growth spurt. If that's the case, his consumption should go down in a week or so. But if it's not a growth spurt, that's a lot of milk. Is he eating solids yet? If so, can you increase his solid intake if you can't keep up with the milk? A lot of BFed babies are overfed at daycare. Babies tend to need fewer ounces of BM than formula. Just something to think about.

  • You could also try fenugreek - but make sure you look up the dose on Kellymom because it's something like 12 capsules a day. I ended up needing to pump four times a day to meet C's intake between months 6-9 (I think that's when, anyway). It was annoying but it worked and I actually built up quite a stash with what was leftover.
  • I know my DCP sometimes asks for extra milk, but I try to leave it so DS gets what I pumped the day before.  Usually that's 16 oz.  I keep extra bottles there for when he goes through a growth spurt or something keeps me at work later than usual but it's a tight negotiation with DCP to manage how much milk he is getting.

That said, with DD I had a more varied supply and I would often up the oatmeal and water and take more milk plus to balance it out.  It never hurt and often seemed to help.

  • I don't think it's ever too late to try adding a supplement.  It certainly can't hurt.

  • I don't know but it's worth a shot! I bought MMP recently but haven't started using it yet. I know how you feel though. H is eating 28oz daily - most of that is via bottles and I'm only pumping about 20 oz so we're already giving about 8 oz formula a day.

Have you tried adding an extra morning pumping session when your supply would be at it's best? Or power pumping? (I don't exactly know the deets behind that but I'm sure you can find it on kellymom)

  • Just the other week I felt like I was just barely matching DS' demands so I started taking fernugreek and I think it helped and was easier than adding in more pumping sessions.  I've actually been able to contribute to my freezer stash again some days!

pump for 10mins, rest for 10mins, pump for 10mins, rest for 10mins, repeat

I went thru a time when I was barely keeping up and I tried to increase my supply but then it all worked out before I finished my stash. I would suggest pumping for a few more mins each session to tell your body to produce more. How often is he nursing? I agree with Wino, that's a lot of BM for a 6-mo old!

and it's never too late to try to increase your supply

  • i don't necessarily think it's too much BM. If i worked out what H eats during the hours she might be in daycare she gets about the same as what you said C is getting (and then there would be 2 feedings while at home - one AM and one PM).

Ditto.  I want to say DD used to take the same amt. from bottles at home (where I know we didn't overfeed her) as she would at daycare, and I sent 22 oz. to daycare every day (plus another bottle at bedtime, and nighttime nursing).  She maxed out around 30-32 oz. per day, and our ped. wasn't concerned.
