Food Allergy

Formula intro

Hello All!

So here is the deal.  My DD is 8 months old.   I have been dealing with a drop in supply and am unable to pump the amount of milk needed for her while she is away at daycare.  Therefore, we have started the introduction of formula to supplement.  I tried the first bit of formula on Monday... just 2 ounces to see if she would drink it, spit it up, etc.   She drank it like it was nothing new!  No spit up!   However, the next morning she had a rash on her chin, neck, cheek, and a bit in her arm elbow folds.  It faded throughout the day on Tuesday, but did not go away completely.  I wanted to test to see if it was in fact the formula, so we did 5 ounces Tuesday afternoon.   Rash is still there this morning and a little more widespread then when she went to bed on Monday.

So, now, do I switch formulas immediately?  Do I continue and see if she adapts?  (She seems okay other than the rash)

Our first try was Gerber Good Start Gentle.   If I do switch ... do you think a switch in brand would be best?  Or, trying soy based as opposed to milk based?

Thanks for your thoughts!  I don't have any friends who have dealt with this and just need to touch base with some other mommies.

Re: Formula intro

  • First, call your pedi and let her know. Your doc may want to have her tested for allergies.

Switch to alimentum (there are others, but i'm most familiar with alimentum)..  You can try soy formula, but i personally am not a fan of soy for children.  Also, 50% or 60% of kids allergic to cows milk are also allergic to soy.  So if you do introduce soy formula, watch her carefully.

Sounds like a dairy allergy to me.. but the best thing you can do is have her tested so you know what to avoid.

  • For sure call the pedi and let them know.. As far as switching formulas, I am of the camp of at least giving the soy formula a try.  I know a high number of kids that are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy, but your kiddo maybe one of those who isn't.  That is something you have to decide for yourself, some studies say too much soy for children isn't good.  That is something you can research and ask your pedi about.  The other formula out there is called Nutramigen, same idea as the pp posted just different brand.  GL!!
