Re: we found a pediatrician... wwyd?

  • So glad you asked this! That is the question we forgot to ask too. I am almost too embarrassed to call their office and ask, if all we need to do is tell the hospital. I don't want to look like a total dumby!

  • I would call back and just let them know you decided to go with the pediatrician and remind them of your due date. I'm sure you aren't the first person to call with the question and they'll be happy for a new patient!
  • I mainly lurk here, but wanted to share our experience. We met with a pediatrician and she told us that if we decided to go with her, to just let the hospital know when the baby was born (I think they will ask/provide paperwork when we check-in), and the hospital would call the pedi's office to set up the baby's first exam. She did mention that depending on when the baby was born and who was on call, she may not be the actual pedi to see the baby at the hospital but we would be able to see her at baby's first appointment the following week.

I asked my OB about this, too, and he said that was the standard practice. If I were you, I'd still call the pedi's office you want to use and double-check on how they handle this, but I agree with PP, I am sure they will be glad to know they are getting a new patient!

  • I am pretty sure you need to give the pedi's info to the hospital so they know who to call once baby is born. That is how it worked in our hospital anyway. I would also call the pedi and tell them you decided they would be a terrific doctor/nurse/office to help you raise your child - this is good and happy news for them. Ask them if there is anything they need from you or if you need to do anything else. You will be talking with the office staff most likely and not the pedi directly.

You are going to be calling the office frequently after the baby is born and you should get used to it now. Trust me when I tell you they get all sorts of strange, neurotic and weird questions from new moms/dads. Yours is not strange at all. If you feel like you cannot call them with this simple question, there are going to be problems ahead for you when you want to call them about any little thing that comes up in the future. You should feel comfortable calling them about anything.

  • I called the peditrician of my choice to ask what the procedure was, the receptionist informed me that we just have to let the hospital staff know when you check in to have the baby.  The hospital will notify the Dr.  But keep in mind that if your choosen Dr. is not on call  you may get another one.  It doesn't mean you have to return to the Dr who saw your baby in the hospital.

    Good luck.

  • When we chose DD's pediatrician, we just had to tell the hospital upon arrival which Ped. office we were using.  When the Dr. on call came to see DD for the first time, we just told them which primary physician we wanted her to see in future, and they made a note of it.

  • When I talked to a very helpful nurse or medical assistant at the Peds office we chose she told us that all we had to do is tell the hospital which dr or at least specify the practice when we were admitted.  From talking with my friends that is pretty standard. (We decided to just rotate drs in the same practice rather than stick with one dr..we want to "try out" a few before we settle on one).  Plus, its easier to get in if you don't have a dr. preference.

But call to make sure.  Just tell them "I've never chosen a ped before..." and they will always be super helpful and understanding....I'm sure they've heard it all!  So this will be nothing.

  • I called and let mine know we planned on using them. They let me know how it worked (he doesn't treat at the hospital I'm delivering at, so they said LO will see the ped on staff at the time, than we'll follow up with them in a week) but they also told me when I would need to call them to schedule her first appointment and also how they billed the insurance. I found the conversation with the receptionist pretty helpful Smile
