Food Allergy

New here... Beef allergy question

We always knew Alex was allergic to eggs (he's had some violent reactions), and sort of suspected that he was allergic to some other foods as well but could never put our finger on it.

We finally got him tested yesterday and it turns out he's allergic to beef, eggs (severly), and lentils.  Obviously I'm going to cut all beef out of his diet, but is there something else I need to be watching out for (like hidden beef?).

Thanks!  I've just never heard of meat allergy before.  I guess this is a whole new world for me to learn about!

Re: New here... Beef allergy question

  • hi.. there are a few people on here that are dealing with a meat allergy. My son could not tolerate it until he was about 16 months old.. he would gag..even if it was pureed..  I think it has to do with the animal protein.

  • My daughter is allergic to beef and pork, but ok with turkey and chicken.  We just don't give her anything beef/pork flavored, and have never had an issue.  This one is pretty easy to avoid (so far at least)!

  • The only "hidden" things we have come across for beef is gelatin. Things like vitamins, marshmallows, jello have gelatin and can have either beef or pork in the gelatin. We avoid all gelatin products except fish gelatin, it is harder to find but there are marshmallows (kosher section) and vitamins (health food store).

some of the gummy candy has it too, so you have to be read the label

I never knew that!  We haven't given my daughter any of that kind of stuff yet, so I hadn't even looked into it.  Thanks!

  • I feel your pain. My little guy is allergic to all the same plus a whole bunch more.  We haven't come across any "hidden meat" but I actually did spot egg protein in a toothpaste I was looking.  I would just be very careful when checking labels.  Best of luck I hope he grows out of some of them for you!
  • My friend's husband and son are both allergic to poultry.

Being a vegetarian, I am used to looking for hidden meat.  Check labels for "beef fat, beef broth, or beef flavoring."  Sometimes "natural flavoring" can mean beef if the product does not indicate that it is vegetarian.  Some sauces can also have beef in them.

You may want to check with the doctor as well to see how strict you need to be.  Good luck!
