For those with LOs on Alimentum or Nutramigen...

How long did it take after you switched to notice a difference in your LO?

Finally, after going through 4 different formulas with LO progressively getting worse (went from horrible gas, to gas and spitting up, to that plus constant congestion, to diarrhea 8-10x a day, to all that plus mucus in his poop, ugh), his pedi suggested that he may have a milk soy protein intolerance and had us switch him to Alimentum. For those who've made the switch, how quickly did it help? The pediatrician said she didn't have a way to test for the protein sensitivity so the only way to know for sure was by switching and seeing if it helped. We go back for his 2 month visit a week from Friday, but just curious if I should wait that long if it doesn't seem to be helping.

Thanks ladies!

Re: For those with LOs on Alimentum or Nutramigen...

  • We just switched DD Friday night.  Saturday and Sunday she was a mess during the day.  Only eating a little at a time, still screaming, spitting up, no bowel movements.  But, she slept much better.  Monday she was much better during the day but was very fussy during the evening (but did have 2 bowel movements), again she slept pretty good.  Today she's very fussy again but has pooped already.

We're still not sure if she has reflux as well.  I take her back friday and I'm going to talk to the dr. about it.

I've heard you should see some improvement in a day or two but it takes a week or two or three for total improvement.

  • I was wondering this as well.  I just started my lo on Alimentum two nights ago.  I've noticed a slight change so far, he seems a little more comfortable.  The screaming/crying has lessened and his gas doesn't seem as painful.  I'm curious to see other's responses.

  • After 4 formula switches, our pedi looked at his stool and saw traces of blood, which is how she diagnosed his allergy.  His fussiness and gas were the biggest symptoms of the problem.

It's hard to say when the formula made a difference, since we're dealing with acid reflux, too.  We saw the biggest difference when, (under doctor's recommendation), we started adding rice cereal to the Nutramigen.

Due to my DS's issues and family history we went straight to Alimentum after I quit BF.  OP: your pedi is right.  They can test for allergy but there is not test for sensitivity.  My son is not allergic but he does have Multiple Food Protein Intolerance.  He can't digest dairy, soy or wheat protein.
  • My DS is on Alimentum due to a milk/soy protein intolerance. We saw a change in DS's diapers after 2 bottles. Within 24 hours, he was a much calmer baby, but it took about a week or so to really see the difference. I think it takes that long to get the milk/soy out of their system from the previous formula.

  • We switched our son at about 3-4 months after finding blood in his stool.  He was diagnosed with a milk protein/soy allergy.  We saw a difference within the first week but they said it can take two to four weeks for an allergen to completely leave the body.

  • Thanks everyone! I've noticed a difference in his poop already so hopefully we're on the right track and he'll start acting happier and less uncomfortable soon. I'm sure it isn't helping things that I think he's starting his 6 week growth spurt and has the worst diaper rash I've ever seen at the same time as this formula switch. :( Here's hoping in a week he's a much healthier and happier baby!

  • Our pedi told us it would take 10 days of being on the Nutramigen to notice a difference (10 days is how long for the previous formula to fully be out of his system). It's been about 2 1/2 weeks and we started to see a difference right at 2 weeks.

  • It does sound from all the symptoms you?ve described (congestion, diarrhea and mucus-y poop) that a milk protein allergy could be the culprit.  Now it?s hard to say exactly when you?ll see an improvement because every LO is different and it?ll take time for your DS?s insides to heal. My son also had milk/soy protein intolerance and it took over almost 4 wks for all of his symptoms to go away (he had silent reflux, ezcema, and green mucousy bloody stools).  However I am BFing and it took me some time to realize that in addition to milk and soy he was reacting to eggs and tomatoes. Once I cut all of his allergens out of my diet he got better.

But, if you don't see a difference in two weeks I would talk to the doctor about switching to an elemental formula, like Neocate or EleCare.  Elemental formulas are made up of individual amino acids (the building blocks of protein), this makes them not only 100% hypoallergenic, but also the easiest formula for LOs with allergies to digest

I think you should definitely be seeing some improvement by the time your next doctor's appointment rolls around.

    Good luck!  Hang in there!
