Cloth Diapering

CDing twins?

Hi, I'm pregnant with twins and plan on CDing. I have found some great deals on prefolds but just have a few questions...

Are prefolds that much of a PITA? or should I just suck it up and buy the AIOs? How many diapers/covers will I need? How about wipes? I have heard from someone that Rockngreen soap doesn't work that great, can you just use free and clear detergent? Any other info would be great! TIA!

Re: CDing twins?

  • Prefolds are fine but with two you *might* have an easier time with pockets.  We use plain old Original Powder Tide at the recommendation of lots of mom's on here.  It's fantastic, we've never had stink, repelling or even staining.  I was hesitant at first but am so, so happy that I went with what people recommended.  If you're looking for inexpensive pockets we I found Sunbaby after I already bought 24 BG 3.0 and 4.0 (which I love) and we are just as happy with the Sunbaby diapers as we are with the BGs.

Since twins tend to be on the smaller side, any one size AIO or pocket likely won't fit for a while so you might want to get some newborn prefolds and covers for that stage.

  • I really liked prefolds for the nb phase, but you might want to get some fitteds or aios for nighttime.  Almost all of our leaks happened at night because of user error.  Its not the easiest to snappi a diaper when you're eyes are barely open! :/

We have super hard water.  Rockin Green was good at first, but we started to get stink.  I switched to the Tide Original powder and haven't looked back! No stink, no repelling, no issues! And its nice to only have one detergent for everything!

  • PF's are not a PITA at all.  They have a little bit of a learning curve, but that can be helped by practicing on a stuffed animal or doll before the babies arrive.  Or if you don't want to worry about the learning curve, just tri-fold the PF and lay it in the cover and put the cover on just as you would a disposable.  Easy peasy and super quick.  You could even have several covers preloaded to make it even quicker.  I had a few FB XS pocket diapers and some XS AIO's for the diaper bag/errands or if I wanted something super trim under clothes, but otherwise, PF's were our go-to diaper.  I had 40 diapers and 8 covers for my DD though you probably don't need quite that many.  So double that for twins?  I'll let a twin mom chime in with their experience here....

As for wipes, we use flannel cloth wipes and some cheap terry baby washcloths (we got a TON at our shower).  We came home with a few packs of disposable wipes from the hospital but it was so much easier to use the cloth.  They clean up messes quicker and they can go in the same bin as the dirty diapers, no need to have a separate trash can.

RnG works great for some and not so great for others.  It wasn't something that was so much better than I felt the need to pay for the extra expense.  I would be careful of F&C detergents, some have brighteners, etc that can harm the PUL in covers and/or cause absorbency issues.  There is a link to diaper safe detergents in the FAQ's at the top of the board that have more information on what to be careful of.

There are several other mom's on this board expecting twins or already CD'ing twins, so if you have any other twin specific questions, I'm sure they can help!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

  • I personally am liking the prefolds more than I thought I would. We go through so many so quickly that I prefer keeping the same cover and changing the inside. We can have more and don't have to wash them quite so often. Also, they're really not that complicated. Once you get used to it you can do it superfast. :)

I don't have any experience with AIOs, but I have used some pockets and the stuffing of them all is tedious. I know you don't have to do that with AIOs, but still. As the cheaper option and knowing you'll need 2x as many, I'd go with prefolds.

We have 5 covers for DS, and we could probably do with less but they're useful to have in case of blowouts. We use thirsties covers, and we have never had an explosion outside the diaper, but we have had them in between the prefold and the cover.  We have about 30 prefolds and can go a couple of days without a wash, although I usually don't wait that long. DS goes through 14 diapers per day, on average. (Least # was 9, most was 19!) I hear the recommended number to have on hand is 24 for a newborn.

I made my own cloth wipes (terrycloth on one side and flannel on the other side). You can buy them too, of course. We don't really use the flannel side. The terrycloth is fantastic at wiping up, and we find that one cloth wipe does the work of 2-3 disposable wipes. I made 50 wipes, and it seems to be a good number. (about 2 wipes to 1 diaper). I would definitely go with cloth wipes, though.

We use Tide free and clear, and it works just fine! :)

Hope that helps! Good luck with your twins!!

ETA: We don't have to do a LOAD as often... we wash the dirty diapers as we should, lol. That didn't come out right...

  • I CD my twins.  DD was allergic to sposies, so I changed to cloth for her and still used sposies on DS.  It was too much of a pain to always have both types of diapers in all my changing areas, so I now CD both.

I use AIOs, with hemp inserts for naptime/bedtime.  And tide powder.  I didn't start CDing until they were about 5mos, so I don't have any advice for newborns.
