losing my mind (sleep)

ok so LO naps unswaddled (in her swing) or swaddled in her pack n play.  at night, she sleeps swaddled in her crib.  we use a pacifier only for naps and sleep.  when she naps and spits it out, she's fine.  but lately when she is in her crib for the night (and mostly after 4am), if the pacifier falls out, she starts crying.  for the last week i've been up every half hour from pretty much 3:30am till she gets up for good at 6:30-7am.

i thought maybe she is done with the swaddle and her struggling with it was part of the problem...  just tried no paci, no swaddle - disaster.  paci, no swaddle - disaster.  now she is burritoed again with the paci.  when does this end?  i think she's still too young to try any of the progressive waiting/rapid extinction sleep methods.  i'd like to get rid of the pacifier around 6 months also.

should i just wait on phasing out the paci till she's a little older?  anyone have any positive experience with getting rid of the swaddle also?  i really don't want to shrug this off as the "4 month wakeful period" and i'd like her to get into better sleeping/napping routines before these become habits that will be harder to break later on.

Re: losing my mind (sleep)

  • that whole "up every half hour from 3:30-6:30 or 7" sounds like us.  Our typical routine is bed at 8, up at 3:30, then he'll maybe stay asleep til 5.  It was a constant up and down last night.  If it's anytime after 5, I bring him in with me and he'll sleep til 7:30.  I know that's not the best solution, but mama needs sleep!

I don't know what to tell you about the swaddling--we use sleep sacks and phased out the swaddle part.  He never did like his arms swaddled anyway.

As for the pacifier, I'm not worrying about it for now.  It still comforts him and calms him if he wakes up cranky, not ready to get up yet.  I'll use it when I go in to rub his back, stroke his head, etc. to get him to fall back asleep.

  • We got rid of the swaddle when he started rolling back to front, and it took us about a week to do so.

We still have the paci problem that you mention above.  It's on my list of things to ask the pedi about on Monday.

Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)
