Success after IF

Those TTC/pregnant/already have LO #2 or more...

We'll be ready to TTC #2 early next year, but I had a question that was weighing on my mind.  Whether you sought fertility treatments for #2 or not, did any new issues arise that did not during TTC #1?  If so, what were they?

I was completely unexplained through all testing available (thryoid, PCOS, any other hormonal issues, endo, tubes blockage, etc) my nearly 2 years TTC DS.  We only found I had MTHFR, a blood clotting disorder while preparing for IVF.  I started taking baby aspirin and 10 days later got pregnant on my "hail Mary" cycle.

So we don't know if that was our only issue all along or if it was just pure luck.  I know, we'll only know when we try, but I thought I'd see what your opinions and experiences were.

Please share your thoughts...TIA!

I had a loss after conceiving #2 which resulted in me finding out I have MTHFR...that is the only thing that is any different (or I guess not different, just discovered). I was also unexplained though I do only have one ovary and tube and we plan on the same protocol for #2 with the addition of Folgard and baby aspirin. GL to you!

  • I apparently have an obscene amount of scarring in my uterus that either wasn't there or wasn't detected prior to having #1.  3 doctors have told me that the amount of scarring I have would make it extremely unlikely that I would ever be able to get pregnant much less carry to term....but my Dr. seems to think it isn't that bad and was possibly even there prior to having G, possibly caused by a fibroid removal in 2007 (the only way I could have gotten it since then was during delivery-- which was incredibly difficult and I delivered a 9 lb 10 oz baby so I think it is possible, my RE thinks it's unlikely....who knows)

  • We're TTC #2 right now.  Everything was exactly the same when we got tested again - 3 years later.  I still have crappy eggs and that hasn't changed.

Good luck to you!  I hope nothing new pops up!

  • I had/have a blocked tube. I was told that pregnancy can (I forget the %) clear blockages usually just temporarily, which must have been what happened for us since we got a surprise BFP a few months after having DD. Now I wish there was a way to know if I have to TTC quickly again if the blockage will "grow" back, but there is really no way of knowing.

Probably not helpful for your situation, but thought I would share. Good luck to you!

  • It took 2 years and 5 IUI's to conceive DD.  DH was totally normal and I was "unexplained"

Once AF came back, we started TTC #2.  We tried on our own for 4 months, nothing. For the 5th month we went back to RE for an IUI.  Everything seemed like it was exactly the same.  BFN.

Month 6 I just charted and was very diligent about having sex evey night for about 10 days straight.  (My CM kept changing, so I couldn't pinpoint the exact time of ovulation and didn't want to take any chances)  aaannnddd BFP!  all on our own!  My prog was still super low and I had to go on PIO again, but it was all well worth it.   You just never know what might happen! Good luck!

I'm kind of a unique situation.  I had slight difficulty conceiving my older daughter and we were just getting ready to do all the testing (had already monitored my follicle growth before ovulation) when I got pg.  However, #2 was a completely different story -- she took 2 years, 6 cycles with clomid, various IUIs on injectibles, and 4 IVFs to conceive.  For whatever reason, things were so hard for me with #2.  Given that #1 had slight difficulty (8+ cycles but we hadn't yet used drugs or seen an RE), I can't help but wonder now if #1 was a fluke or something happened and screwed me up for #2.  I have no idea and never will now.  I'm just so very thankful I have them both.

  • We have been trying for #2 since I birthed DS (well we did wait 6 weeks Stick out tongue). We mc when DS was a year old and  we went straight to the RE after that. We had moved so it is a new RE but he did not retest since I seem to be unexplained. He just took a more aggresive approach since I am 36 years old now. Unfortunatly we have done 2 IUI cycles resulting in 2 BFN. However our unmedicated hail mary cycle resulted in a BFP but another mc. So we are waiting on my betas to drop and I think I want to give a few natural IUI's a try since I apperently can get KU (5 unmedicated BFP's so far resulting in only 1 live birth).

So in short no new diagnois just more agressive due mostly to my age.

  • Nope, our situation was pretty cut and dried. I was anovulatory/PCOS before and DH's swimmers were fine, and the same was true when TTC no. 2. Nothing new came up. But, we didn't wait very long between kids, either, we were back at the RE when DD1 was 9mos old.
