My Dr. in not so many words is suggesting that I consider weaning DS. With my extreme weight loss and handful of other ailments it's obvious BFing is stressful to my body and taking it's toll on my health. She believes once I stop that I'll get back to a healthier weight and feel much better. I haven't made any decisions yet, but I've been thinking a lot about it.
So if you weaned and don't mind sharing, how did you go about it? And how long did it take?
TIA
Re: It's being suggested that I wean :(
we night-weaned first and then offered a bottle in increments - keeping the after-nap session for last.
I wonder if just cutting back will help? nursing is actually an immune-booster...

How often are you nursing? It took me about a month to fully wean Aaron. I dropped sessions one at a time until we were done. Are you getting an extra 500 calories a day over your pre-preg normal intake and have you talked to an IBC Lactation Consultant about the weight loss?
ETA - That should be "it took me about 9 months to fully wean Aaron." I wish it'd been a month

I had a similar situation - I was losing a lot of weight breastfeeding and all the weight loss was impacting my health. My doctor had me go on a very high calorie diet and I still couldn't keep weight on. Have you talked to someone to help you with going on a higher calorie diet? I know that can really help (even if it didn't for me). As someone else suggested, maybe cutting out some feedings might help you gain some weight.
Once I weaned DS at 13 months, I gained weight pretty quickly. I weaned both kids pretty slowly - I cut out one feeding every week until we were done.
You have done amazingly well with D. No way I could have kept up with his needs!
So here is what I did. When I weaned he was 3 feeds a day. I dropped the first one easy peasy.
The last 2 were harder on me...but honestly not so much for him...and he was a big boobie man!
I just decided which I wanted to hold onto the most...for me it was the before bed feeding. So I dropped the morning one about a week after the first.
The last one I waited about 3 weeks to drop just cuz it made me sad to drop it. I didnt pick a day...I just decided one night this was the last time. I tried to really remember the moment and came out and cried with Tony.
He was totally 100% fine with it...and that kinda made me sad too LOL

With M #1, I dropped one session/week. Did naps 1st, then wake-up, bedtime last. Took one month and, as others have said, it was harder on me than him (emotionally hard on me, not physically).
With M #2 we both got a nasty stomach flu when he was 10 months old - landed him in the hospital for 2 nights on an IV and between his not eating and my getting sick too, my supply tanked and I couldn't get it back once we'd both recovered. I started supplementing with formula after each BFing session and once we started supplementing, weaning just gradually happened. Again, it was about a month before we completely weaned.
Weaning was also harder for me the second time around because I wasn't ready. I had a goal of BFing until 1 year, which I accomplished with my first, and was really upset that I couldn't do the same for my second.
I'm nursing on demand and he's nursing about 7-10x/day with 2-3 meals of solids. During the week, three of those feedings are bottles of BM. I'm pretty sure I'm getting enough to eat (calorie-wise.) My eating habits haven't changed much since I was PG. But, I'm also sure it's far from a well balanced diet since I have a huge sweet tooth.
I haven't spoken to IBC LC, only my regular Dr. I'm embarrassed to admit the only LC I've spoken to about any BF related stuff are the staff at Kaiser's Newborn Club. If you have a recommendations to a LC in my area that would be great.
I want to continue BFing, but I also want to feel better. So I'm willing to make the necessary changes.
