I'm a lurker coming out of hiding with a potentially dumb question
My son, who turns two this week, is allergic to peanuts, strawberries, eggs and intolerant to dairy (he was severely allergic but seems to be growing out of it slowly).
There is no history of food allergies with my husband or I. My husband does have a lot of environmental allergies as well as a childhood history of asthma and eczema. I am adopted so I don't know if there is a prior family history of allergies on my side.
My question is, should I be avoiding all the foods that DS is allergic/intolerant to while I'm pregnancy with this baby? I have done some preliminary research but I there's no solid answer either way. The jury seems to still be out on whether avoidance is necessary.
I don't eat eggs but I do cook with them sometimes (treats for myself . I eat a lot of strawberries in smoothies that I take to work. Otherwise, we don't keep them in the house b/c DS loves them and can't have them. I eat a fair amount of peanut butter but not a ton.
I don't know....I'm conflicted. Any experience with this?
Re: DS has food allergies and I'm pregnant again
Yay to growing out of allergies! hope he continues on that path.. and glad you came out of hiding.
I'm also pregnant and that was my first question to my allergist.. and she said not to have any peanuts but everything else in moderation. (my son is allergic to milk, soy, eggs, peanuts). My son eats almond butter and she said not to eat too much of it either. To pretty much spread my diet out and eat everything in moderation.
With my son, i ate PB every day for lunch.. sometimes more at night. She said that's not why he's allergic to it but she just wants me to avoid it. I actually had some peanut M&M's and 5 hours later when i got home (washed my hands, but not rinsed my mouth) my son would not stop rubbing his left eye for the rest of the day. I know it was b/c of what i ate, so it's not even worth eating it.
Are you asking if what you eat during pregnancy have any impact on the baby's future allergies?
In my very own un-scientific experiment,. the answer is no. I was pregnant with twins and ate pretty much everything (including a lot of PB). Alex has some allergies (severely to eggs, plus beef and lentils), Harry doesn't have any (except slight to dust mites).

I heard at the spring FAAN conference that the latest research is showing that avoiding during pregnancy can lead to allergies in the baby. I think the truth is - no one knows for sure if there is a correlation.
I would agree to eating things in moderation and hoping for the best!
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
DS#2 - Allergic to Cashew, Pistachio, Kiwi
DS#3 - Allergic to Milk, Egg, Peanut, Tree Nuts and Sesame
I called DS' allergist and that's basically what she said. She said she wouldn't recommend me avoiding these things but not to go overboard either.
