NBR: Anyone have a Ford Escape?

Right now we have two Fusions.  We really need something a little bigger since we now have the baby plus two dogs.  We took a trip last weekend and it was WAY too crammed with all of us.  I actually sat in the back seat while DH drove because the passenger seat is up so far when the baby seat is in the back.  It wasn't a fun ride, to say the least, but I'm not totally convinced that an Escape would give us too much more room.

Does anyone drive an Escape that can offer their opinion?  I notice that it says you can fold down or take out the back seat.  Would it be possible to leave the baby seat on one side and take out the other side of the back seat to make room for the dogs to lay on the floor?

Oh, and we get the A Plan with Ford, so we're planning to stick with them and the Escapes have the best deal going right now.  I would love an Explorer, but they are out of our budget.

  • Darnit. I wrote a book, and the bump ate it.. Sorry if this is rambling!

I have a 2005, it has over 100k miles on it, and it's still treating me nicely. I haven't had any major issues with it, and only one or two recalls since I've had it.

My DH is 5'11'' and the baby sits behind him. He does have to sit up closer to the dashboard than he normally would, but he says he's not uncomfortable.

You can't remove the seat in my car, but it does lay totally flat with the back storage part of the car. It's very easy to put the seat down. You could easily leave the baby in the backseat and put the rest of the seat down for the dogs. I'd buy another one if we were in the market, and I would also love one of the new Explorers!

If you have any questions, let me know!

  • Thank you so much!  That helps.  The more I look into it, the more I like it.  I think I'm sold!  The best part is that I can upgrade from my Fusion and my payment will actually go down a little bit.

  • I have a Mercury Mariner, which is exactly the same car and I love it...of course, I used to have a 2 door pontiac grand am, so it's a whole different world having a small SUV.  But the size is great for us, and as previously mentioned, the seats fold down flat which is awesome.  You will have a small side (just the size of 1 seat) that will fold down, and the larger side that includes the middle seat, where the baby car seat will sit.  So if you are looking for space for dogs to lay (not sure how big they are), just keep in mind that you will only be able to fold down 1/3 of the backseat.  You will still have the whole back area though.

    Hope you enjoy!

  • I have a 2010 Escape. And I love it. LOVE it! We bought it because we have 3 dogs, and we're planning on having a baby at the time of purchase. We wanted something that would fit all the dogs and luggage, and us. It does fit all three dogs in the back, a 60lbs husky, 65lbs pit bull, and 10lbs dachshund. They get a little cramped when our pit gets too excited.

We have a keyfit 30 car seat, which sits the passenger seat. I'm 5'6" and have enough leg room, but I can't lean the seat back to lie down. The seats fold down, 1/3 and 2/3rds so you could easily fold them down flat to give the dogs extra room if you wanted to.

I love the gas mileage that we get! And the sync feature which not only connects to your phones bluetooth through the speakers, but it also will give you directions to a location, whether or not you pay for the visual gps touch screen upgrade. Mercury has the same car, but I believe it's more expensive.

    My overly happy baby girl!

This really helped.  If you guys can all fit, we definitely can.  Our two dogs are about 40lbs each.  I LOVE the sync feature.  I have it in my Fusion and it's awesome!

Ditto all of this - except we have 2 dogs instead of 3. We love Escape!! We're taking a trip to visit family in a couple of weeks and will fold down a portion of the seats to fit the dog kennel and all of our luggage in. It'll all fit perfectly. It's a great SUV with some really great features - roomy but not too big, great gas mileage, the Sync system - fabulous. It is something we will likely have to upgrade when we have baby #2 in a couple years in order to fit both dogs and luggage in, in addition to 2 carseats, but as of now with only 1 baby, we're good!

  • We upgraded from our fusion to a 2011 Escape and we have a chihuahua and one baby and it was the best decision ever.. You can definitely do the seat folding however you want, just take the headrests off and they go completely flat. We have a gracco travel system and have the car seat behind the passenger seat. My husband and I are both 5'8" and sit comfortable in the front passenger seat. You can't put the seat back very far, but it's comfortable. If your payment goes down and you are good with the payments and what not, DO IT! IT's so much more comfortable! The stroller and then some fit great in the back and what not. ;) HTH
  • I have an Escape.  Love it.  However, sice LO has come along I am looking to upgrade to somethimg bigger.  Trunk wise you will get more space.  But, I don't think you get any more seat space than a regular sedan.  JMO.
