Train Museum

Lucas is train obsessed.  Yesterday we took BART and he was going insane.  DH and I were thinking he'd enjoy taking Amtrak up to Sacramento to go visit the train museum.  For those who have been there, is he too young (he's 23 months)?  Do you think he'll enjoy it?

Also, what train station do we get off at?  I noticed that there are two in Sacramento.  I'm assuming it's the regular SAC station and not the capitol one...

Re: Train Museum

  • I think he would LOVE the train museum! My nephew loved it at age 2. There is only one train stop in Sacramento, and if you take the Capital Corridor from the East Bay, its (usually) the last stop for the train unless its continuing onto Nevada City. The Capitol one might be a light rail station? It would be the stop AFTER the Davis stop.

  • The stop would be the regular Sac station (it's just down the street from the museum).  The Sac Capitol one I believe is only by bus from the Sac station to get you closer if you work over there.

Your son will love it!  Have fun.

  • I have been taking my kids since they were younger than your son and they have LOVED it! If you go on the weekend, they have a steam train ride that is super fun!

  • We have taken Ty a number of times and he LOVED every second!! Such a fun place.
  • We took my son a few months ago and he asks to go back ALL the time.  We have friends in Sac that we hope to visit more often this year so we bought a membership that includes admission for one adult, one adult guest plus ride on the train on the weekends for $45 which paid for itself in one weekend (DH went to the museum twice, I went once and we all rode the train once).  DS was free since I think kids under 6 are free.

The exhibits are awesome in scale and scope, and the Thomas play area is out of this world awesome.  I think they have at least 4 fully outfitted Thomas tables, each with a bunch of trains (unlike just about every other one we've encountered), plus a larger Thomas set that a kid can climb under to stand in the middle.

    Enjoy!

  • We did this and M LOVED it! It was a long day, but we also had a 1 hour drive to the Oakland train station.
