I know you said you didn't want to buy another crib but honestly both of mine are still in cribs.  A 2nd crib was essential for us, just knowing #1 was "contained" during bedtime and naptime helped ease my mind.

We will do the same with #2 and #3 since we already have 2 cribs, but #1 will go to a single bed soon.

We transitioned dd to a toddler bed at 17 months and a twin bed at 18 months.  She took to them both really well and she is still contained in her room with the baby gate at the door.  I did not want 2 cribs for such a short period.  I love it now with her in the twin bed when she needs comforting at night i can just hop in bed with her and she doesn't come into our room at all now.

Okay, I'm out of the norm on this one too as I transitioned my oldest into a toddler bed at 12 months.  She has been in it for 6 months now with no issues.  I love it and am so glad we did it when we did.  I plan to do the same thing with the little one at 12 months.
