Alimentum at almost 2?

DS has been on Alimentum for milk/soy intolerance since he was 8 weeks old.

He tolerates all other dairy just fine - yogurt, ice cream, cheese...everything.   Except straight milk.  He turns into a gassy, fussy mess whenever he drinks whole milk of any kind, even Lactaid.  We even tried soy, rice, coconut milk - he spits it right out.

He is still on Alimentum, but I know we are going to have to go off of it soon - he will be 2 in November.  I don't know what else to try.  Any suggestions?

Re: Alimentum at almost 2?

  • his doctor can prescribe a toddler formula (but i actually think it's only up to 2 also).

Is he allergic to rice milk? or just doesn't like it? try putting allergy friendly chocolate syrup in it and making it into chocolate milk. I tried it last week and it was a no-go but he was just curious and surprised so i'm going to try again.

there is also coconut milk, hemp milk, oats milk

also, i know at 2, a lot of parents get their calcium from other sources (juices, veggies).. and rarely from milk..

My daughter will be 2 in December and she is still on Neocate Junior.  It isn't just for toddlers.  An adult could drink it and survive on it alone.  They have chocolate and tropical fruit flavors besides the original flavor.  It is nasty though, so I am not sure if he would be able to switch very easy (although the flavored ones aren't horrible).  Plus, it is prescription and is very pricey.

I need to talk to my daughter's pedi about this too because I don't know if she will still need to be drinking it after the age of two.  We were told to give her two Tums a day for calcium if she isn't getting enough formula a day.  The pedi said to either crunch it up and put it in her water, or smash it into bite sized pieces so that she won't choke when she eats the Tums.

  • I know Neocate Jr... and I think some types of Elecare, can be used after 2 years. We'll be on Neocate Jr. for at least a few years because DD's allergist doesn't see her growing out of any of her allergies anytime soon.

  • My son will be two in August and he is still on Neocate Jr almost exclusively.  He will probably be on it for the rest of his life.  Neocate Jr. and Elecare, I believe, are good for kids over two years of age.

There are only two types of Elecare - unflavored and vanilla. Both are the same, other than the flavoring. Elecare is actually a medical food, not just an infant formula. It provides complete medical nutrition from birth through adulthood. You would only mix it to the higher calories for an adult/child over 2. *quote fail - I meant to quote the post regarding Elecare
  • My son will be 4 in a few weeks and has been on Neocate Jr.  Since he turned 1.  The dr.s have no concern about leaving him on it.  Best of luck.
