Birth Control Opinions

Hi All-

I have my 6 week appointment today and I am trying to explore birth control options. Prior to getting pregnant I was on Yaz for 2 years which caused me to gain weight and then the last year I was on BC I was on Ortho-Try Lo which seemed better as that was what I was on originally 10 years ago. The problem with the pill for me is I feel like I'm such a different person when I am on it as far as mood swings.. Definatly fluctuate in weight more... I have heard of some other options like the ring, or the IUD...Can anyone give me any insite on the ring or other options?

Re: Birth Control Opinions

  • I am a different person on hormones, too.  They also stay in my system too long, so I choose to get the Paragard Copper IUD.  It is non-hormonal and once removed there is no waiting period for TTC. I am scheduled to have it put in on Thursday.

With hormone based BC, weight gain is a possibility whether its in pill, patch, ring or IUD.

  • I had issues on the patch 7 years ago that barred me from using BC for that long (hence LO). I was cleared for an IUD and chose Mirena because it's progestin-only. It's pretty great so far and won't interfere when we TTC again in about 1.5 years. With my insurance, it was $40 and much more economical than condoms or pills.

So far, no weight issues or mood swings.

  • Thank you both for your opinons! Oh_Maria was it painful to get the IUD?
  • I'm waiting until DD starts solids, then I am going with the Nuva Ring. I've never tried it before, but I don't like the idea of an IUD and hate taking a pill each day!

  • I was on the Nuva Ring for 4 years before TTC and I LOVED it! I wanted to go back on it, but have to wait till at least 6 months. I liked that you didn't have to worry about it but once a month. It did not affect my mood or weight. The only thing that we didn't like (sorry for TMI) was sometimes during sex, DH would come out with the ring around him haha It was weird and a total mood killer but always gave us a really good laugh!

This time around I am going for the Paragaurd, a hormone free IUD.

Mne goes in Thursday too! Hormones cause my body to go crazy!

This is exactly what I am doing too. We are 98% sure we are done having kids so I wanted something that is long term and non hormonal so I don't have to worry about anything until we decide if we want another kid or if we are done. I am getting mine tomorrow.

I can't have an IUD because I had a c-section and my doctor said it would be VERY painful (since I never dialated) or she would have to knock me out which my insurance wouldn't cover.

I tried the ring in the past and it felt like I had  UTI all the time.

So I am back on the pill.

I am breastfeeding so I don't want a BC pill with estrogen. I'm going to try the mini pill for a month and make sure it doesn't affect my supply. If all is well, I want to get the Mirena IUD- I've always had terrible, painful periods and I would like the side effect of light or no periods- especially since I can't take my DongQuai Combo (an herbal tincture that has been the only thing to help my cramping and mood swings) while BFing (one of the ingredients- I think the DongQuai- is estrogen-like).

I'm nervous about a couple things with it:

    1) I don't know the cost- DH's insurance will reimburse but we need to pay upfront. Yes, even in Canada this is not covered by our universal health care.

    2) Nervous about milk supply.

    3) I've heard well-endowed men can hit the strings and cause pain/discomfort for both parties.

Worst case scenario, I'll have it taken out.
