Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC and working out.

So I have been doing the couch to 5K training program and am almost finished. I slacked off the last week or so because it was getting hard and I didn't know what it would do to my body since I think I finally O'ed.

Ultimately I want to lose some weight (I've lost 9 lbs so far), but I'm afraid that pushing myself too hard will be counterproductive to our TTC efforts. In my job we have access to free personal training and I know it would help a lot.  I just don't know if I should sign up or not.

What do you think I should do? Work out with a trainer or keep jogging on my own?

Re: TTC and working out.

  • I would say just work out on your own and see how it goes.

I have done the couch to 5k. It is a pretty great program. Once those runs start to feel too easy, try a 10k program. Easing into a workout is a good idea even when not TTC, trying to push too hard is when injuries happen.

I am in the gym 5-6 days a week, I still go as often, but have toned down the intensity of the workouts while TTC. My doctor has told me that since I have always been this active, it should be ok, but for now I want to give myself the best change of a BFP.

  • I personally would work with the trainer if one was offered to me.  Since I'll never know when I will get KU, I tend to not hold off on anything.  If I did I would have missed out on a lot since December.  On the other hand, don't do anything you're uncomfortable with.  You have to do what you feel is best for you.
  • I don't know much about the program you're doing but I do know that exercise is good for you. You want to be in the best shape possible when you get KU so you can keep up a good level of exercise. It will help with the pregnancy and labor/delivery (so I've heard). Personally I wish I had been running more often so I'd feel more comfortable running now and I'd be in better shape. Unless you're doing something crazy strenuous like a professional athlete it shouldn't affect TTC. GL!
  • I was worried about this since I exercise a good amount and some of the workouts are very intense (CrossFit), but I've done a lot of research and asked my Dr., and everything I've found is that being in good shape should help you get KU, but not hurt your chances.  You'll know if you're working out too hard or losing too much weight if your cycles become irregular.  So as long as you keep seeing fairly regular cycles, you should be fine.  Good luck!
    TTC #1 7/10, Me (31)- Dx DOR (AMH 0.6); DH (30)- normal
BFP on Cycle #8. Natural M/C at ~8 weeks
    IUI #1 and #2 (8/12, 9/12)- 50 mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFNs
    IVF #1 (EPP) 13R/10M/9F, 5DT 1-4AA blast, beta #1-148, beta #2-322, 5 frosties!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I think after I find out what happens with this cycle, I will decide. It's my first cycle O'ing since December, so I'm going to be extra cautious. If I get a BFN, I'll sign up with the trainer.

  • Could you sign up with the trainer and tell him/her that you are TTC?  They typically look at your whole health and goals to determine your regimen.  Maybe s/he could work with you on diet and nutrition?

I would say this! I started back into my fairly intense workout routine back in March. This was also the month we decided to ttc our third. It must have delayed my O because my cycle was 8 days off!!! I have very regular cycles almost always 28 days long! This was not a good start to my ttc journey! lol..so I would say as long as you are seeing no problems with your cycles then go for it!

I thought about that, but I'm afraid it would be really awkward, because we basically work in the same office. The fitness department is just down the hall so I see him all the time and we're really trying to not tell anyone. I'll have to think about that and when I would tell him if/when I do get KU.

  • I also started back on an intense workout our first month TTC.  I had been charting and new my cycle.  I feel my working out delayed or kept O from happening.  I am now walking for 30minutes 3 times a week, as we continue TTC!

     Good luck!

  • My doctor said exercise is fine (and healthy!) while TTC but to make sure I don't overexert. So I say go for the trainer, but make sure to drink plenty of water and keep a close eye on your heart rate.

  • Wow if that was me I'd definately choose the free personal trainer.  Just tell them you are TTC and they can tailor your workout accordingly.  I know some people that continue running 5K even while pregnant.  I think as long as you were active before you should be fine.
