NTR: SLR Camera Recs please!

I know that some of you ladies either have an SLR or are very knowledgeable about them. I really don't want to spend the money on Consumer Reports but if I have to, I will, as this is a big investment.

I was look at this camera, since it comes with an extra lens (which I've read will come in handy). I've heard that Canon Rebel is a great SLR that is still for your basic person but much better than the point and shoot. Is this a good version of the Canon Rebel? Would you suggest a different camera? What should I be looking for specifically?

I appreciate any input. I feel like personal recommendations can almost be best!

Re: NTR: SLR Camera Recs please!

  • I bought a refurbished Rebel XS for $260 directly from Canon. It was like brand new out of the box, and it is more than enough camera for me. I used the savings from buying new to get some better lenses since the kit lens is pretty crappy.

  • Ehh. I'm not a fan of the bundles generally, especially because most of the people I know don't get a whole lot of use out of that second lens included (it's more of a distance lens). I think a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 as a second lens is much more useful--assuming your plan is getting good pictures of your kids and family. It's better suited to close ups and portraits. Personally, I'd go for the 15mp (I just saw 18 at the store the other day, but obviously that's costlier). I just feel like dSLRs are such an investment, and while you will get awesome pics either way, I'd go at least middle of the road in terms of what's available so there's no regrets. (I say this because I'm currently kicking myself for not bucking up the extra $100 to get the 12mp version when I bought my first rebel several years ago).

  • I have the Canon Rebel and I LOVE it!  I have the lens that came with the camera but I also purchased the Canon 1.8 too.  It's a great lens for taking pics of DS.  I would highly recommend the Rebel...I have lots of friends that have it and LOVE it!

  • I got the Canon Rebel T2i for Christmas.  My DH got me the kit.  I know the kit lense isn't the best "glass" out there, but I'm just learning photography and it is great for now.  I have really taken some great pics, and am so happy with the camera.  It's pretty easy to use, and you can always buy extra lenses, flashes etc when you get better.  The ladies on the photography board are really helpful.  Below is what DH got for fathers day.

Thank you so much for your insight! I really appreciate it and will keep all of this in mind!
