Mattress and monitor recs?

We have our registry completed for the most part, but I am not sure if I am completely in love with our choices for a crib mattress and a monitor. We would like to go with a foam mattress, but I am completely overwhelmed with choices.  We did not put a video monitor on our registry, but I am wondering if that's something we will eventually want? I think we registered for the Sony DuoCall right now. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I don't remember what mattress we got--just a mid-level Serta or something like that. It is not foam. I assume the foam ones have a waterproof cover? That'd be my only concern.

I can't imagine not having a video monitor. There are plenty of people who don't have one and survive just fine, but for us, it's been a must have. It's so nice to be able to just peek in when you hear fussing to see if you really need to go in the room. We still use it every night. We have the one by Summer that lets you pan around the room. We got that one once Holly started sleeping in a toddler bed, and our other one was on the fritz. Originally, we had the normal Summer day & night handheld.

  • not sure about our mattress -- we have a foam one but we got it at a local store when we lived in NYC.

We also have a Summer video monitor (handheld) with two cameras to see each room.  I love having the video monitor.  It's saved me from going in thinking they were awake to see that they were actually just fussing and going back to sleep.  We didn't have one to start with though.  I didn't get a video monitor until we moved DD#1 to her own room.  I recommend them.

  • Can't help with a foam mattress; we just did a coil one. I think it was around $115 at BRU and had 200+coils. You want more coils to offer better support for baby.

I know everyone on here is very pro-video monitor, but I don't have one and have never missed it. I have the Sony Baby Call with 2 monitors and have been happy with it.

  • We have the Colgate Classica III I think, which ever version has a firm/soft side. I love it, it is so light and it is easy to get in and out of the crib.

We have the Sony Baby Call Monitor with voice activation and it is great, we only hear DD if she cries (you can set it to hear everything).

  • the colgate classica is the most recommended foam mattress it appears from my lurking on the nursery/gear board. the big advantage is it's lighter, which makes changing sheets easier. we're registered for a mid-level serta right now, but i might change it.

we're also hung up on monitors. DH balked at the price of the video monitor, but we both agree it'd be nice to have. i'm interested to see what others recommend in addition to what's above.

I was due the same time of the year as you (my due date was 12/27/08), and we got our video monitor at a Black Friday sale at BRU.

Bless his heart, while other men were lined up at Best Buy, DH was in line at 5:00 am at BRU. hehe.. But with the sale, plus a regular BRU coupon, we ended up getting it for about $120.

    Just something to consider!

  • We have the Colgate Classica I - got it used off CL for $25!!

For the monitor we have the Philips Avent DECT monitor, we chose it because of the low rate of interference with other devices. I highly recommend it!

  • We have the Levana BabyView20 video monitor. We got it when my daughter was around 8 months old and I was mad at myself for not having it from day one! She's 2.5 now and we still use it.
