How can I make bedtime later?

DS used to go to down for bed around 9-10pm everynight until last week.  All of a sudden he has started his long stretch of sleep (5 hours) at 7 or 8 pm.  I would like to get his bed time a little later, maybe around 9pm so I can sleep more during his ling stretch.  Does anyone have any advice?

  • In my experience making bedtime later = worse sleep.  I know it sounds crazy but I go to bed at 8:30.  It is much easier to rearrange your sleep than try to manipulate LO's sleep.

Sadly, I agree.  I can't manage to get myself to sleep at 8:30, but every morning I wish I would because I'm so tired. I plan to go to bed earlier every day but then evening comes and I just want some "me time" (or "us time" with DH).

Still, with both Drew and Elizabeth I haven't found a good way to move back bedtime that doesn't just screw up the whole night.   The good news is that early bed times become better and better as LO sleeps longer.  Drew has slept from 7:30pm - 7:30am since he was five or six months old and it's fantastic!

  • Have you tried to dream feed right before you go to bed? Thats what worked for us. She has her last feeding at 7:30pm then goes to bed at 8-8:30, then I dream feed at 10:30 and she sleeps til 7:15-7:30

I tried it a couple times.  It hasn't worked because either he wont eat or he wakes up too much and then he'll wake up every 2 hours after that.

  • Honestly? You can't. DD decided her bed time was 7 pm, and if we tried to push it back we got meltdowns, hysteria and crappy sleep.

We start her bedtime routine around 6:30 now and it makes for such better nights. And she's sleeps until 5 am as it is.

This is us.  DS was going down between 10 and 11, when we went to bed.  Last week, he suddenly decided he wanted to go to bed at 7.  I had to wake him up to put him to bed a few times, so now I'm just putting him to bed earlier.  9 seems to be the latest he'll go.  DH doesn't get home until after 7, so we tend to eat around 8 or 9, so going to bed earlier isn't an option.  I'm kind of enjoying the baby-free wind down time, though.
