Attachment Parenting

Recommend your favorite sleep/parenting/AP books.

I am not looking to sleep train or "baby wise" or anything. I don't want to read a book that tries to tell me to put my kid on a parent led schedule. I simply want to learn more about sleep in young children, and pick up some AP style parenting guidance and ideas so that I can set up patterns that are best for our family. What books do you recommend? Thanks!!

  • No Cry Sleep Solution. The techniques didn't work for us but she does a good job of giving some gentle ideas to help babies sleep better.

  • I liked the NCSS and Dr. Sear's books. I also read Ferber's book and found his sleep information useful. It's not all about CIO.

  • I'm staring at Good Night, Sleep Tight by Kim West and Joanne Kenen. It has been sitting on my desk, unread, for about a week.  I'll give it a look at and come back with an update. Also, I love everything Dr.Sear's and family puts out.

  • Thanks all! I ordered NCNS (the nap version) and Dr. Sears' book. I also picked up a book that is really interesting- Brain Rules for Baby- it's about brain development in infants and toddlers. The author is a developmental microbiologist with a background in genetics of psychiatric disorders- so it's full of nerdy info and references to research studies. I like learning about the science behind what is driving my LO.

  • My favorite is Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.  It has a lots of useful information in the first chapters about the sleep process.  And it breaks down what to expect/milestones/etc at  0-4mos of age, 5-12mos, and so on, up through adolescence.  It focuses on sleep for the whole family, and gets dads involved too.

I LOVE Brain Rules for Baby! It is awesome! I am nerdy about that stuff, too.  Dr. Sears' The Baby Book is one of my favorites, and I like the approach that Elizabeth Pantley uses as a pro-breastfeeding, pro-cosleeping author.  I just got the Toddler/Preschooler version of NCSS.
