Eggs and 1st Birthday Cake

All of my nieces and nephews had reactions to eggs as babies/small children, so I'm nervous about a potential egg reaction with DS. My youngest nephew had to go to the ER after his 1st birthday party because (his parents later learned) there were egg whites in the frosting. So... when ordering a 1st birthday cake for DS, do I just need to request no egg whites in the frosting, or should I be requesting a completely eggless cake? TIA.

Re: Eggs and 1st Birthday Cake

  • Unless you know of a vegan bakery you will most likely have to make it yourself. Regular bakeries probably won't make one and if they will, the risk for cross contamination will be huge.I always make our cakes (Food Allergy Mama recipes) then order cake toppers from the Internet. I've made How to Train Your Dragon, Scoobey Do, Transformers, etc.

  • Has he had egg before?  If not, I would try him with egg a few times before his party.  If he is egg allergic like my DD, then I would make a cake.
  • Ditto Kimi.. If you are really worried that he is going to be allergic to egg, and he has never had it before than just try it in small amounts.  Have benadryl on hand, for the just in case. If he has a reaction give him benadryl, if you think it is serious call 911 or go to the ER.  If he does have a reaction, there are plenty of options for eggless cakes that you can make.

I get that your neices and nephews have issues, but that does not mean that your LO will have an egg allergy as well.  Sure, be cautious... but there is also a chance that he isn't allergic!

I agree with this too.  But if your nieces and nephews are still allergic to egg it would be nice to have an egg free cake anyway so they can be included.  Just a thought.

i agree with kimi and luvmagoldn. and also this was my first thought.. if you have family members that are allergic to eggs, i would avoid eggs so that everyone can enjoy it (but it sounds like thy outgrew it b/c you said "as babies"..)
