When to have my baby shower?

Hi I'm a first time mom and I was wondering when to have my baby shower. Most of my friends go out of state to school so I would love to have it in the summer, say August, so they could all still come. Unfortunately I'm not due till January so this means I will only be about 41/2-5 months along in my pregnancy by the time August rolls around. Is this way too early to have my shower? I would hate for something to happen to my baby and then have a bunch of gifts, but I also would hate for most of my friends to be unable to attend if I wait till the fall. Any advice?

Re: When to have my baby shower?

  • My MIL threw one for us when we were visiting them in OK in May and I was about as far along as you will be in August. It was mostly an opportunity for me to meet some of hubby's family that I hadn't yet, no games or anything, and they really all just talked to each other, but we did have cake and gifts. I don't think there's anything wrong with having it that early if you have a reason to. :) I won't be having my "real" shower with all my friends and family until after the baby is born because I live out of state at the moment (Army wife).

  • With DD 5 years ago I had a shower with my family in June then one with my inlaws in August.  I had DD 10/19/06
  • What about doing it over their Christmas break?

If not, you could always do it in the spring after the baby is born (if you wanted to wait until after).

  • I think any time is appropriate if it fits your situation.  Have fun at your Shower! :)

  • If all of your friends go out of state to school, why don't you wait until Thanksgiving break or Christmas break? If you're not due until January, then that should be fine. My sorority sister had her baby on January 2nd, and her shower was over Thanksgiving break. She had more than enough time to get everything ready for the baby.

Even a fall shower would probably be too early. Not because you run the risk of issues with the baby, but it may seem gift grabby if you're having your shower TOO early.

I have the same issue. A lot of my friends and sorority sisters live out of state. I'm due in October, we're having my shower in August so that they can make it. My mom is throwing a seperate shower before then though. But I do understand how you feel when it comes to getting them to be able to come because of school and whatnot!

  • My husband and I had to move because he is n the military and we had it at 16 weeks because none of our family and friends would be able to make the 20 hour trip to us. I say whatever you want you are the mom and its your baby! Do what is easiest for you!
