Boston Babies

New to the Boston Area

Hi Everyone!

My name is Erica and I currently live in Cincinnati, Ohio but will be moving to the Boston area in July/August with my husband and my 7 month old son.  We are having a hard time figuring out where we are going to live.  I will be working downtown at Tufts Medical Center and my husband will kind of be all over the place.  We found a few townhomes in South Quincy that we really like and we found an apartment complex in Melrose that we really like as well.  I would love to hear pro's and con's of each area and how kid friendly the areas are since we are coming from not knowing the areas at all.  Thanks in advance!!!

  • Quincy is not a great area especially for kids. Melrose seems to far away for you. You should look at Brookline or the nicer areas of Cambridge. Or see if you can find a nice place in Back Bay. Also the nice parts of Jamaica Plain.

  • I am going to disagree w PP.  I think Melrose would be a great area, a nice downtown and great places to walk, lots of young families, safe.  And Boston is very accessible by both the T and commuter line.  I don't know a lot about Quincy.  Living in Brookline or Back Bay might be great if you can afford it but both communities are very expensive.

  • Id stay away from Quincy, even though the T is there Route 93 is always tough with traffic if you are driving into the city.

Depending on the commute you are looking for I would look in Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Wext Roxbury or Dedham. Dedham is very accessible to the city, I-95 which then gets you to the Mass Pike. Lots to do in Dedham and route 1.

If you are just looking for rentals now I would check these out - https://www.station250-apts.com/ - clearly a little pricey but nice.

I don't know too much about Melrose but I know my friend is looking at buying a home there and she has a 2 year old!

  • West Roxbury and Dedham are both great areas, with easy access into the city and highways. Looking ahead to schools, Dedham has the edge because it is not in Boston, so it is not part of Boston city schools.

  • Whether you go north or north shore, you will always  have a tough time getting into Boston by car because traffic will always stink during rush hour. You can get into Boston easy by public transportation in either direction.

I live in Braintree and would hightly recommend it. It right next to Quincy  but much less crowded and has more of a town feel. We can easily access the highway to  get into Boston, although we usually would take the "T." We are also super close to Cape Cod and often take day trips there. The school system also has an excellent reputation.

  • It all depends on your budget. Brookline, Back Bay, nice parts of Cambridge are expensive. JP is getting to be expensive too in parts but at least you'll be on the Orange line, which will go right to Tufts Medical Center, and you'll be among lots of young families. I used to live in Quincy. It was OK. It's reasonably priced, convenient to public transit and highways, and also has lots of young families, but parts of it are dumpy. It'd be a good place to live while you got to know Boston better.

When you do make it out here check out Hip Mamas Boston on meetup. We have a mom who is also from Cincinnati.
