Night time diaper change ?

I know I have read that some of you don't do a nighttime diaper change unless needed (poopy).  Well i am jsut wondering how those of you who swaddle know if its needed.

By the time I undo him (out of a swaddle me) the velcro has startled and awoken him, and he gets upset so I figure I might as well change him.

I know if I didn't do this he would go back to sleep after eating so much better, but I'd hate him to sit in a poopy diaper.

  • I can smell a poo from beneath the covers!!!

And if I can't smell it, I don't change it!

  • I read about this sometime last week too, and decided I would try it. Well, it makes nighttime feeds SO much easier and shorter. He wakes up, I pull him out of the bassinet, and he eats for maybe 10 minutes, falls asleep on the boob and I just put him right back in the bassinet. Easy peasy.

I swaddle in the sack, and just sort of smell him on the way into my arms when I initially take him out (he's got pretty potent poop). If he's not smelly, I leave him. The sleep sack I use also has a hole in the bum so I can smell it easier if he is poopy.

Do it, it will make LO go back to sleep So much faster and get you back to sleep all that sooner as well.

  • I guess his poo just isn't that pungent.  Only when he has a big one can I smell it, but when its just a half dollar size or so I'd never know, until I change him.  I guess I'll try the sniff test tonight-Thanks!

  • Sometimes I think I miss the poop in her diaper over night. But, I always use A/D ointment at bath time, so she has some protection! If it started to irritate her skin, I would for sure change it every time she got up.

Is your lo fussy when pooped? DD really is! So I pretty much know when she has gone.

  • I get up and BF, then change her diaper while her bottle heats up so she's awake enough to drink it.  I guess I'm lucky because she's only had one poopy diaper overnight in her life so leaving in her in a slightly wet diaper for the couple hours between feedings hasn't been a problem.

  • DD never wakes up crying at night, we just wake up to her shifting and squirming and making a few grunts and coos. I do the opposite of everyone else, I change her first and then feed her. I know that eating will put her back to sleep, so I do the "uncomfortable" part, ie change her, and then snuggle and nurse her back to sleep. I only change her after she eats if I hear her poop during the feeding... because yes, they are still very audible.

Otherwise, because she has no rash or redness and I take "never wake a sleeping baby" very seriously, I leave her be. And yes, admittedly, that includes sometimes when I hear her go but she stays asleep and comfortable. I feel really guilty even typing that. Tongue Tied

Ditto- I change before every feeding- even at night. We use cloth so I feel like he is more uncomfortable with a wet diaper.

Totally agree.  If it is not bothering him at night, it is not bothering me.  He gets lots of butt cream during the day though!

  • If M is asleep I don't bother her at all. If she wakes up for a night feeding, I change the diaper, reswaddle, then feed her. That way she is all set when she konks out.

  • One time I forgot to change him when he woke up to eat, and he went back to sleep so much easier I started just not changing him in the middle of the night.

I also can't smell if he pooped through the swaddle blanket we use, so I just make sure I use a little extra Desitin or A&D so he doesn't stick to the diaper or get a rash and then a little powder around his manhood to keep that drier for a little longer.. He wakes up happy as can be and falls asleep while feeding and when I put him back down he goes right back to sleep. I think there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with skipping the nighttime change if baby doesn't seem to mind.. my advice would be just use a little extra cream or powder on him to avoid the diaper rash .. Same here.  We CD and the liners of the diapers really seem to wick away moisture and he mostly feels dry, so sometimes I leave him.  But our LO is really easy to get back to sleep so I usually just change him then feed him then put him back to bed.  Changing a diaper at night takes me under a minute because he is sleepy so he isn't wiggly.  I don't mind that extra step since it doesn't seem to bother him.

  • Also, your swaddle me doesn't have a slit near the butt? Mine does I assume it's for checking diapers.

  • We CD, so that makes a difference for us. I use a super thick hemp diaper for our overnight. DD use to wake up fussy because she had a wet diaper (before CD). Since I started using the overnight diaper, she slept for 3 or 4 hours and would only wake up to eat. (I'd change her if I could smell poo) Now she's sleeping through the night, so I don't worry about changing her diaper until first thing when she wakes up to eat in the morning. I do coat her tush with some diaper creme to add some protection. We've been doing the overnight diaper for about a month now and have had zero rashes.

  • When we changed at every feeding when we were using disposables (DD had diaper rash, and I didnt want it to get too bad) I would feed one side, Dh would change, then I'd feed the other side until she fell back asleep. Which worked fantastic for us, I'd be up 30min tops and that was usually because Dh took forever to change her.
On the rare occasion she would fall asleep on boob #1 within a min then I wouldn't bother because it wasn't a true feeding, just comfort nursing.

    My overly happy baby girl!
